LMMS is annoying the shit out of the actually competent musicians in the house. I took it on the tube with me and worked out this dazzling technical display. Now all I need is words.

Does LMMS require instruments to be plugged in to create music, or does it provide everything in the box?

Everything in the box. Soft synthesizers. This is a Dell Mini 9 with an Atom N270, which is sorta anaemic by modern standards, but rendered that in real time.

I put the music in by tapping, frustration, working out the rhythm under my breath and nearly missing my station. Worked it out in pure sine waves, then picked nice noises. (I found it way too easy to be distracted by the nice noises if I started from them.)

Note that LMMS is the sort of software that makes people annoyed at Linux geeks. It's full of amazing capabilities and frustrating limitations, an opaque interface with terrible documentation and a tendency to crash unpredictably. I got used to hitting control-S every thirty seconds.
