installing and setting up xubuntu 16.04. why the hell does vim-gtk have apache2 as a “suggested package”.

to make capslock a control key, run /usr/bin/setxkbmap -option "ctrl:nocaps" from Session and Startup->Application Autostart, and fuck you xubuntu for still not including an interface for this basic x11 config shit. you’re darned lucky you haven’t comprehensively sodomised the pooch like gnome or kde.

(i'd be running xfce debian if it wasn't as bloody ugly as sin and mint if they'd ever heard of security.)

how the fuck do you set preferences for nautilus when you’re not actually running gnome. edit: the answer: gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences default-folder-viewer 'list-view'

I see that X11 hasn't improved in any useful manner since I finally cracked and decided it was worth paying the Apple Tax for the desktop. It was Debian deciding that I was going to have a desktop environment whether I wanted it or not that did it. Ubuntu is basically the same, but with the patronising design decisions made by Marketing rather than a mailing list catfight.

(Debian deciding that I was going to get a good rogering from systemd was enough to push me into the FreeBSD camp for my servers, but that's a rant for another day.)

Anyway, while I still steer clear of X, James seems to be quite happy with LXDE on FreeBSD. It's running fine on one of my infamous knackered old hand-me-down fan heaters.

James: "Yes it does."

When prompted for more dirt, "it doesn't let you change the timezone it displays in", although that doesn't seem entirely unreasonable what with this generally being set by $TZ. But then he showed me the GUI to adjust the clock settings and it did go downhill from there.

On OSX, I get rounded-corners with a few limited options, which ultimately just sets the strftime format anyway, but without the flexibility to just type in my own format if I don't like the precanned options.
