I see that X11 hasn't improved in any useful manner since I finally cracked and decided it was worth paying the Apple Tax for the desktop. It was Debian deciding that I was going to have a desktop environment whether I wanted it or not that did it. Ubuntu is basically the same, but with the patronising design decisions made by Marketing rather than a mailing list catfight.
(Debian deciding that I was going to get a good rogering from systemd was enough to push me into the FreeBSD camp for my servers, but that's a rant for another day.)
Anyway, while I still steer clear of X, James seems to be quite happy with LXDE on FreeBSD. It's running fine on one of my infamous knackered old hand-me-down fan heaters.
