I fixed it because the install was about a week old! And we didn't have the Win98 CD to hand, just the CAB files, so attempting to fix it was suitable passing entertainment.

We're not running the DSL through either PC - the DSL modem (an Alcatel SpeedTouch 510) does the dialing and connection itself, and acts as a router and NAT box to four Ethernet ports. The 'Windows software' is just a monitoring tool, which in fact does not work at all. You can actually do the entire modem setup, into quite geeky detail, through a webpage it serves to the intranet. So it was actually easier to get intarweb working on my FreeBSD box (could you grab DHCP please. Thank you.) than it was on the Windows box!
