THE LAPTOP WORKS! It boots and we can log in! 233MHz and 96 megabytes of IBM Thinkpad 560X 2640-700!

Of course, there is the minor detail that (a) it's running OpenBSD (which is a damn good sign as it indicates highly standard hardware) (b) there are two accounts, root and test (c) test isn't in wheel. So I might just have to go hunting for 'sploits against OpenBSD 3.3!

It's missing a network card. Spare PCMCIA Ethernet, anyone?

*pint*s of glory to [livejournal.com profile] mstevens for bringing this boon into our lives!

And exactly what is wrong with OpenBSD (http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=slrn99jljv.3q8.fun%40blowtorch.softcell.com.au&oe=UTF-8&output=gplain)?

First thing I do when I get new hardware is reinstall it anyway, so that's how I'd deal with it (that or boot from cdrom/floppy/etc and mount / to edit shadow).

I've got a spare 10Mbit pcmcia ethernet card if it's any use to you.

No root password==reinstall. For "fuck it" values of reinstall.

I've a Xircom 10/100 card that I don't think I'm ever going to use.

I'm very convinced that I have a couple of spare PCMCIA cards...

It is indeed Highly Standard Hardware. I've got a 570E, and never had a problem with anything that wasn't just a plain old hardware failure.

There are very few StinkPads that OpenBSD won't at least chug along on. Sometimes there's X issues, but since when is X a safe assumption ever?

Sounds like the two old ThinkPads salvaged from my Uncle's place when he was put into care. One is a 300 Mhz, somewhat decent. The other is a 486 I think, one of those small, monochrome deals. Hell, it's still running 3.1.

Er, quite.

If you don't get an offer from within the M25 force-wall, I'll, um, think of something. We'll be at the Brixton Academy next weekend, but the likelihood of me wanting to go anywhere but there and the offy is minimal.

Why doesn't booting from a floppy that understands the filesystem work?
