I am writing this from the one Internet café I've found that will let me just plug the laptop in. Dotcom Internet Café, near the corner of La Trobe and Elizabeth Streets; charges $3.90 an hour.

I stopped in at Dick Smith (return policy 14 days money back) and bought a NetComm (their modems were very good, I assume their WiFi is okay) 802.11g (why skimp and get 802.11b) PCMCIA card for $118. I've just downloaded the drivers.
