Faith in the fable of coral and fish.
Jul. 10th, 2004 11:58 pmB-Movie on Friday was a Top Night. The second doors were open until
midnight, allowing the presence of breathable air and patrons not expiring
from the heat.
arkady and I attended, she in her best 21st
century Holly Golightly — pink and purple fringe, pewter gauze
dress special effect, Hayway court shoes, fur coat. I got
approximately one million photos and drank too much and smoked too much.
valkyriekaren is ridiculously photogenic; if you hear her
saying otherwise, be sure to correct her on this point. Chatted at length with
deeply_spurious and berated him for having spent a page and a half carefully not actually answering "what is goth?" and thus giving me nothing to crib and reference. I requested "Paradise City" for
redcountess and we danced to it for her. We stayed until the end and caught the bus home. Apparently there were armed police somewhere in Seven Sisters; we have no idea why.
The pair of annoying fuckwits were at B-Movie again making trouble; they weren't caught close enough to the act to be ejected in the proper manner, but I understand Heidi had a Little Word with one at one point, and I have a pic of one offender I'll be putting up for identification and comment.
Today, Arkady and I went to Tottenham Court Road to annoy the
Scientologists again, bumping into
ewtikins and
shevek outside. We discovered that when you're handing out leaflets,
it's very helpful to have a decorative dolly-bird along as well as the
usual smelly geeks. A hint to the Scientologists: calling the police to get
rid of demonstrators will not work if they come along and see that the
demonstrators aren't actually causing trouble in the general sense;
furthermore, they will consider you timewasters. We had many pints at
Xenu's secret lair afterwards, where we happened to bump into
gmh and
clanwilliam.
This evening is systems administration. The laptop hard disk refused to spin up this morning, though it appears to be working now. (I suspect cabling or motherboard rather than the disk itself.) Liz attempted to upgrade KDE from ports on the FreeBSD box the wrong way on Friday, We fouled it up considerably trying to fix the problem — it's difficult to get FreeBSD to eat its own ports tree, but it can be done — and nothing works any more. We've saved /home/lilith and will be installing FreeBSD 4.10. We'll try an upgrade before resorting to wipe and reinstall.
Liz is deeply annoyed at feeling utterly *splat* this weekend, misses you all terribly and is saving her energies for the anniversary dinner tomorrow. Monday will make one year without killing each other! Quite.
