The lack of IMPENDING THERMONUCLEAR APOCALYPSE is why goth sucks these days. It's almost impossible to get this across to anyone under thirty.

(thanks to [livejournal.com profile] s0b for inspiration)

Update: Fifty-one comments from other people in just over an hour? This could be my greatest hit.

Update 2: This has now inspired [livejournal.com profile] marnameow to a poll.

Which explains why the best goth tunes were in the 50s and 60s and it was never quite so convincing after that?

Yeah, the angst about nuclear threats has been vastly diminished from the mid-late 70s. Notyhing is as before, not even nostalgia. I demand a more interesting past as time goes by!

Oh wow. I think I need that.

I want to host a 1950s Cold War party now. We could eat Unwise Food and do swing-dancing.

Give the radical elements in the world a few more years to develop/steal/buy their own nuclear devices.

Actually, that doesn't quite cut it, does it? We need to be sure that any missile launched will trigger a 20x Overkill... damn...

Hey now, with the terrorists you've got religion in the mix as well, unlike those godless commie bastards.

Clearly we need to get Bush to threaten North Korea a little more.
That'd up the threat level.

At that point, I came to the conclusion that i9f there was a bomb, I lived close-enough to several factories building shit like fighetr aircraft avionics that I'd probably not even see the flash, so I instead lived as if I had to experience everything *now* (also, I started moving towards a double-digit age; I feel exuistential angst is strongest around 7-8 years old).

I didn't get existential angst until my teens, which was mostly the 1990s.
