Geekly trepidation! We just won a £250 bid (£318.74 after postage and VAT) on five IBM Thinkpad 560X laptops in unknown but likely to run working order. With one each and others for parts, plus the dead one we have here, I think we'll be putting a couple up a bit later. And we can use our other recent geek purchase, a USB external caddy for 2.5" hard drives, to install them!

The 560X is utterly obsolete (Pentium MMX 233MHz; enough grunt to play MP3s, not quite enough for DVDs), but has a lovely form factor and weight and so remains quite popular. Definitely one of IBM's winners. eBay going rate is £80 to £120.

What a time to lose my credit card. Thankfully they accepted Switch. Should be arriving Wednesday.

(The spare room now contains two working PCs, one working Macintosh, two non-working PCs and a dead 560X. We'll build a proper geek junkheap!)

In non-geek news, tonight I expect to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] disastrid on her London tour. We can commiserate about missing cards.

Wooo, how much would you want for one? Playing MP3's and reading ebooks in bed would do perfectly. :)

You know the service manual is online at IBM's site, right?

Indeed.

Any luck getting hold of Camden Town or Kings Cross btw? You could probably get their numbers from Customer Services. I've checked my notebooks but don't have those numbers, alas. You should also call oyster about your Oyster card so they can blacklist it - otherwise if someone picked it up, they can use your Travelcard. The advantage with Oyster cards is that they can alert the system so that specific card will not function anywhere on the TfL network - buses as well as the Underground. Plus the sooner you notify them, the sooner you can get a replacement.

Well yes, both of those are givens. I've been looking for a low spec but functional laptop for a while and looks like I shall have some money coming in shortly so if you do have any you are selling I would definately be interested.

Indeed. And the BIOS upgrade. I got to know IBM's support pages intimately when we were fixing up our first 560X.

OK. I should have mentioned it last night, except I was going a bit splat by then. I'm still a bit splat today, but it's more of a mental splat than a physical one.
