Finally posted an image after a month: the 4chan bible. (No images, I promise.)
Today has been Technology Day! The ancient Compaq AP400 has had its dustbunnies blown out and is back in service. It's still running an ancient FreeBSD 5.3 (I might even update it one day), but should be able to talk to the turntable USB sound card, and serves the 500GB media bucket okay over SMB. Once that's all in place I can get rid of the screen and do basic ripping from the command line. Fancy Audacity crap can be done by hand later.
With only moderate application of the maternal cattleprod, and the spectre of her friends visiting, the younger teenager has blitzed her room. You still can't see much of the floor, but at least I managed to move her PC, screen and mouse in there and make sure it was on the network.
We now aren't sure what to do with the G3 and G4. What I'd really like in place of the AP400 is a Mac Mini or a silent tiny PC — spares or pointers (cheap homebuilt kits) welcome. (I'd grab one of pir's if I had the bucks to spare.) The AP400 is quiet, but it's not silent and it's way too big. Update: it occurs to me that it's possible to jailbreak the Apple TV and run full OS X on it. Any tips?
