I knew [livejournal.com profile] mjg59 knew far more about the Linux kernel than was probably healthy, but I didn't realise he actually did contract work for Canonical on Ubuntu. So yesterday's tech support was well worth a pint of Porterhouse Red.

It appears most of the problem was not that kernels past 2.6.8 will never work in the least, but just one kernel config option. (I don't remember which one or I'd tell you.) With that in place, the wireless card works and the laptop suspends. Things that don't work: the card doesn't autoconfigure to our network on boot and the network doesn't come back after suspend. (iwconfig wlan0 essid any then iwlist s may or may not work.) And sound doesn't work reliably either, though that's down to esd being shit (the cs4232 driver itself works fine). I shall be doing what I can to beat the card into configuring properly on boot and on return from suspend.

Note to Ubuntu: if you detect the screen at 800×600, why not set the font size to 8 instead of 10 or 12. Then users won't be wondering what it'd be like to have screen left to do stuff with.

[livejournal.com profile] redcountess loves Ubuntu for the games. So that's a reason to switch from Windows. Ubuntu looks like a very nice way to do Debian, which looks like the sanest way yet found to do L*n*x.

More domesticity today, including my own first batch of the scones. [livejournal.com profile] arkady can be very helpful to have around.

The Lee shoes didn't go, so we've relisted them. The hard drive went for a nice price (for an as-is) and the Docs for about the going rate. PalmOS 4.1 just a few hours to go!
