I want to live to a hundred so that, when they ask me the secret of a long life, I can say "pounding sodomy, drugs, indiscriminate sex and gargling sperm."

Oh, I'm sure he's just high on life.

Should be - more harmful, more addictive.

Have I ever told you the beauty I find in the phrase "pounding sodomy"?

WORD.

I want to live to a hundred so I can say "regular liver replacements, baby" in answer to nothing at all.

Yes indeed, enquiring minds want to know :) And rather hope the answer is both.

<cough>

I should have stated tobacco ones, of course. And also of course, it's the nicotine that's addictive, the tar that's destructive.

I would expect any smoke in the lungs to be a little deleterious, though passive smoking won't have all the horrid tars that active smoking of standard cigarettes produces. Speaking as a currently-non-participating smoker.

Indonesian clove cigarettes are made with Tobacco Of Fatal Death - I've seen packets quote a nicotine figure of 1.3mg alongside the ludicrous tar content - and augmented with the addition of an assortment of spices chiefly including cloves.

I want to live to 100 because it would suck to be one of the last people to grow old and die just before they bring in life-extension technologies.

(Aubrey de Grey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey_de_grey) reckons that the problem of death can be solved within a decade or so. I imagine he may be a bit optimistic, though if he's 500% off, that should still be in many people's lifetimes.)

I'm going to make a simple statement of my position here:
Until we have by-and-large-clean-enough energy generation, and five-nines efficiency waste reclamation, pursuing Aubrey de Grey's objectives is sickeningly immoral.

Wouldn't having children be even more immoral? After all, that results in exponential population growth.

If everyone only one child (assuming a normal lifespan) it'd actually decrease population by a factor of 2.something over a generation.

No, having children does not necessarily result in exponential population growth. If mean lifespan remains roughly constant, a mean birth rate of approximately two live births per female head of population produces a stable headcount.

So what's a considerate maximum age to live to? 80? 120? When does one, in your system of ethics, have a duty to die?

It is interesting on the subject of life extension treatments - near future science fiction/cyberpunk.

My great grandmother lived to be 105.

She ate cookies and coffee every day.
She was my great grandfather's mistress for MANY years (until his first wife died).
She crossdressed for fun in the 'teens. Skinnydipped, too, and took pictures.

Even once she was blind and deaf as a blind and deaf bat, the dear old girl could snak up on you silently, goose you (leaving you screaming) and run for it, also silently, except for the cackling.

I'm thinking that she wasn't as blind and deaf as she let on...

Perfect!

"pounding sodomy, drugs, indiscriminate sex and gargling sperm."

With a bit of luck and some careful promotion one day we might be able to get that on the NHS :-)
