[livejournal.com profile] redcountess' PowerBook adapter died on Friday afternoon, one month after the laptop's AppleCare ran out, so I had to stop at the Apple Store on the way home for a replacement right away or she would be adopting mine for the duration. FIFTY FIVE GOATFELCHING QUID for the official Apple adapter. Rather than a compatible replacement for twenty off eBay. A wire on the laptop plug went intermittent; if can get the correct replacement (some weird thing shaped like an RCA plug but bigger) I'll be able to put the broken adapter back in service.

I got home from work and collapsed. The job is going pretty well, but I don't know how you people cope with working several days a week for months on end. Today we slept all morning, then tidied up a bit (you can now see the floor in [livejournal.com profile] arkady's room, though not the bed) and watched the DVD of American Splendor, which I think we're going to buy. I think tomorrow will involve shopping and more housework.

Probably just as well. The off-brand adapter that we got (i only ever see the one on ebay, so i'm assuming it's the same) overheats every 20 minutes or so in every season but winter.

Argh; I hate laptop power supplies. I'm on the third for my older Dell laptop, and the second for this IBM. Not cheap to buy the brand replacements, but I distrust third-party models after a bad experience with a handheld machine letting the magic smoke out.

Another failure mode is a capacitor blowing up, letting out magic smoke, the characteristic smell of burnt electronics in the morning, and putting a bulge in the side of the adapter near the plug.
So far I'm not impressed with Apple's build quality.

I was inches from buying American Splendor today myself (but instead decided to play the responsible adult and replace the bedsheets my ratgirl chewed a hole in... sometimes I hate being a responsible adult). I, of course, highly recommend Pekar's comics, as well.

This is why we drink coffee and alcohol.

On bad days the two get combined. Would you like me to Irish up that coffee for ya? </roger>

I've never met anybody who does cope with working several days a week. What I do doesn't count as work, it's getting paid for messing about with shiny things down the road from my house.

it's nice to see that computer manufacturers' failure timers are so accurate, isn't it? One month after the warranty expired.

55 quid? Ye felping gods! Can't you get a "universal adapter" at an electronics store? It's just a transformer after all. You just have to make sure that the output voltage, current and polarity matches the old one (and the connector, of course).

Define "cope". I work, but I have no life.

Ah, Apple pricing and service. My family used to be rabid Mac fans when I was a young'un, but we ditched them years ago because of that.
