The house is slowly digesting our stupid amount of stuff. Last night I set up one desk and the FreeBSD box so [livejournal.com profile] eyeliner297 had a computer to use that didn't hate her. This also meant somewhere to dump half the crap on my laptop. DSL and phone on, washer-dryer coming Monday, Sky Tuesday. Landlord to remove his crappy furniture some time soon I damn well hope; I'll ping him again this evening. Then we can get [livejournal.com profile] arkady's stuff in! Abi goes home Saturday (she has one, apparently) so I'll have to start cooking again.

I am tense and shitty and am being told with varying degrees of gentleness to calm the fuck down. *eeexxxxhhhaaaallleee* I need to go out this weekend. What's on? Assume any social plans I have already agreed to have completely escaped my cheesy brain substitute.

The drinking thing happens here. 6 years ago it seemed more important then ti is now, btu if you did not socialise you could and did miss out. Not that you had to eba hard drinker, but discussions would happene din the pub and soem of them would nto happen in an office setting and if you were not there.... Conversely it could go wrong make an idiot of yourself and it could be very costly and some of the constraints and stop checks in an office where not there.

Yes, in my last job in Australia, it was only the drinkers and the smokers that were promoted, as they did all their networking down the pub or in front of the office :-/
(I still drank at that stage, but the last thing I wanted to do after finishing a shift was go to the pub with my cow-orkers)

We all still love you! [grin] It's a tense and shitty business, this moving thing-but it'll all get soted in the end, and you'll have a Real House with Room in it and Other Cool Stuff.

I might be persuaded to stay till Sunday if you still need stuff done over the weekend. What was that about Homebase?

Oh, and there's steak pie for dinner tonight. More oozing carcass to keep you all happy.

We should be free, or you at the very least - but keep in mind that Monday is Neil Gaiman and Thursday is Terry Pratchett.

Crikey. Monday is shaping up to be pretty busy all round, isn't it?

Oh, cripes yes, I'd forgotten about the delivery - they can arrive any time until 7, so I may have to miss out and give you my card so you can meet David and pick up the tickets.

I hear that's changing in most workplaces now because thanks to all the anti-smoking laws and companies not wanting the image of smokers outside the building. It's thought of as dirty because of all the ciggie butts.

Families

We should really talk about this.

We talk about this sort of thing in anthropology all the time. If what somebody does in private has social consequences then the whole of society tends to have something to say about it.

Oh but the 'Merkins are weirder because they serious boundary issues. They argue about stuff that has no social consequences just as much as the stuff that does.

Red Family, Blue Family.
Those colours have relevant political meanings in the UK; couldn't they have used neutral colours ? By the time I'd figured out which way round they have them (the wrong way: red conservativbe, blue liberal/left) I'd got too emotionally involved and felt too threatened by the claims they appeared to be making for me, that I couldn't take in what they were saying.

I guess that "The Red Flag" isn't big over there ?
Or is there just no relationship between liberals and socialists ?

I'm not an American, possibly non-American, feel anti-American at times, so yes I am some sort of unAmerican; what sorts are there to choose from ? :-)

Erm... any valid study will take into account the fact that correlation != causation.

I mean, consider -- drinking socially isn't exactly cheap, you know? Those $8 cocktails at fancy bars tend to add up pretty fast on minimum wage, not so fast when you're bringing in a couple hundred thousand a year. Think that might have something to do with why 'social drinkers' are the ones with higher incomes? Naaaaah. These 'scientists' have already proven that drinking gets you raises, and they've collected a score of personal anecdotes to back them up, so let's all go hit the bar, shall we?
