I have been thoroughly failing to keep up with LJ again. If there's something on, please tell me here. Hard to keep up with text telly and be creative — the UnNews is just jumping into the net without me even thinking about it. It's half way through the month and I've only done about eleven and a half thousand words, so it's not quite NaNoWriMo. Also, people might actually read it.

We looked at and applied for a lovely house on Saturday and [livejournal.com profile] redcountess and [livejournal.com profile] arkady paid the deposit today. Of course I WON'T THINK ABOUT IT unless and until we get it because THE DEAL'S NOT DONE UNTIL THE DEAL IS DONE. No it isn't. ... Lovely house, though.

Today was a pounding sodomite of a day at work, with me being the only one actually in until 12:30, when another co-sufferer showed up to cope with the industrial-grade stupid. It's very special being out of Christmas lockdown. I had to work!

From Friday evening (hence no Dreadnought. Bugger.) until the following Friday morning I am on call. As such, I am hereby putting out a call for people to meet me and GO OUT FOR A DRINK or ten tomorrow, Wednesday and/or Thursday. I'm looking at you ... And then of course there are people to visit me by day next week! There's a pub down the street in need of investigation ...

I'm all hot on going to this pub called The Dove that's on the Hammersmith side of the Thames path. Might Wednesday work?

I almost had a job, but the fifth time I said I don't have a driver's license, they finally heard me. I am slowly pecking my way through the classifieds for a job that fits my needs. I'm working through my writer's block. My mental health is improving slowly and surely.

You haven't missed anything exciting :)

Yes indeed! Is 6:30 about right or are you free earlier? (I could also go tonight, FYI.)

There is a small chance I can do Wednesday as I am waiting for a cheque to clear and for a refund from Maplin. If either of those arrive in my bank account tomorrow I can come - if not I have no money until they do :(

Apropos of no recent post you've made at all, may I ask something of you in your 'solaris-geek' mode?

I downloaded the DVD of Solaris 10 this afternoon and, checking allt he bits and the .iso were correct (via MD5) burnt the DVD and put it in my Ultra 60 (which should run it no prob).

Except it doesn't. It displays the following:
Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@6,0:f File and args:
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
Evaluating: boot cdrom

Can't open boot device

(my bold) .. Any idea what this 'magic number' is and where I sort it out (nothing on Sun's download/install/etc pages)??

If it works I'll have your babies oops ... someone else got there first!

The magic number thing means it can't read the disk label.

Have other CDs worked okay in that drive? Suns can be quite funny about CD drives.

It is a DVD drive and it has previously read (FreeBSD latest) cd without a problem. I've now downloaded the CD version of Solaris and will burn those shortly to see if it is *DVD*-related, though I see no immediate reason that should be the case ...

How annoying ... it is booting from the *CD* version fine.

/me gets annoyed at a factory-fitted drive labelled "DVD" that - apparently - dislikes the things ...

There may be a way you are supposed to burn them, or something. I've no experience with sun DVDs, just CDs.

well the DVD segments were downloaded direct from sun, concatenated exactly as Sun demand, MD5s all checked out and teh burn process is an .iso image so no choices there either, so sfaict I tried to use an image exactly as Sun expect (but see my LJ for the latest 'issue')
