I'm still not quite reading LJ. Please comment here or email me (dgerard@gmail.com) rather than assume I have read an important post.

Thanks to Aidan for Friday's Channel 4 news. The first 12:30 was indeed John Reid saying something stupid and the rest was arguably actual news, with the dead donkey showing a cute little tabby cat. DENIED!

RealPlayer on the Tungsten C does indeed play in the background, once I went through ridiculous contortions to extricate the .prc files from the Windows InstallShield binary with the devastating one-two knockout of Wine and UnShield. It also powers off after three minutes and this can't be switched off. Also, the C is mono only, the 2.5mm socket is actually a proprietary Palm horror which I can buy a converter including microphone for ten quid from Expansys which puts it out to a split-mono 3.5mm socket and every review from 2003 said "almost the perfect PDA except the sound system." Meh! Love that wifi, though. That's enough to forgive the mononess. Hotsync over wifi is just 'l33t.

I gave the estate agent nearly two thousand quid on Friday. We collect the keys next Saturday and then I hire a car to carry boxes and coincidentally drive [livejournal.com profile] redcountess around on her birthday! We plan to move our furniture, cats and selves the weekend of the 10th. Liz flies to Australia for a month on the 19th, and I'm on call that week so [livejournal.com profile] arkady and I will finally fetch her stuff and my records from the storage locker. Then spend a few weeks playing three-dimensional Tetris. Then Liz will get back and tell us how much more we have to allow ... Box packers and stuff shufflers are most welcomed over the next couple of weeks. We have gin! And beer! And hot babes! And delicious candy! And KITTIES!

I have been writing UnNewses though I haven't been posting them. Probably a flood tomorrow.

Update, 1:34am: Guess who was still playing Second Life when I came downstairs just now. "I was just logging off!" GEEK.

My Tungsten T3 has a jack that does standard stereo, which comes in handy for Bhajis Loops. Mind you, there is no audio in other than the built-in microphone. I heard T3s are quite cheap these days.

Who is John Reid and why can he be expected to say something stupid on the news in such a regular fashion?

And Lizz is coming to Melbin? Whoo hoo! We must get together and have a big gossip.

He's the Home Secretary. Home Secretaries are expected to say at least one really stupid, dumb-arsed thing during their term in office that completely wrecks their career and that everyone else will remember forever afterwards. John Reid seems to be excelling at this, in that he says stupid things every time someone sticks a microphone under his nose.

Sooner or later someone Higher Up will notice this, Words Will Be Had, and he will end up resigning (possibly involuntarily). But in the meantime he provides entertainment for everyone whilst we try to figure out really dumb crap he's going to come out with next.

It's a slow-motion trainwreck, really.

Oh, ours does that too, but he grins while he says it so nobody remembers what he said.

How much do professional box movers cost in London? Here in Vienna I can get 2 strong men incl. truck for €40/h (well, say 45 incl. tip so they're actually careful with the stuff) - the back-pain-saving alone is well worth the money. (And nobody cares if they park illegally)

True. I bought one on arrival here, and found that I didn't use it (other than the battery issue, the Palm is not a very good web client). I think I still have it somewhere.

Unfortunately I'm using the Linux alpha client which doesn't stream audio, so I don't really bother paying attention to the music or parties that much!

Which club do you DJ at, out of interest?

To your Hotmail address, as the only other address I have is the Yahoo one, and that bounced.

Um, to clarify, the email bounced when I tried to send it to the Yahoo address, so I resent it to the Hotmail one.

Oh OK. My hotmail has only there for comments from my [livejournal.com profile] ladystardust_xs journal and for MSN so I probably deleted it thinking that it was a comment that I'd already read on my journal. Sorry. I don't know why the yahoo addy bounced. That's weird. Chris Jones has been having trouble emailing me too thanks to bouncing. Oh well. My email addresses are all up-to-date on that "Contacts" post I made.

So, wanna meet up? Come and meet William and the cats! :)

On my Palm Zire at least, if RealPlayer is still the foreground app when screen timeout happens, that goes dark but music keeps playing in the background. If I go look at my to-do list or anything else, though, even though music keeps playing behind that, a timeout while that's on screen then shuts everything off.
