Vox is not merely the Milton Keynes of blog sites, but the walled estate of blog sites. That nonmembers can't comment at all sorta misses the point of my Wikimedia blog existing. Any hints on favoured blog engines and what you do and don't like about them? Let's assume I don't want to just set up another LJ. Heck, I might even run something on davidgerard.co.uk myself.

Last night I went to dinner and the Dev with [livejournal.com profile] eyeliner297. We got utterly smashed at the Dev and, in a fatal move, went to Quinns after the Dev shut at 11pm and got more smashed until 1am. Quinns is fatal on a school night. Abi is luvverly and I think I survived work today.

We still haven't extracted our deposit from the old landlard, but the new landlord's electrician dealt with the blowing light quick smart (a loose earth wire). It's so nice not renting from a slumlard.

I'm on call as of Friday 6pm, so am considering going out tomorrow. Anything on? Visiting [livejournal.com profile] rosefox by day when she's over next week, and next evening out will be the return of B-Movie next Friday.

Wordpress seems to not suck too hard. I use it on a few sites, and it's given me no trouble. Other people I trust (eg. [livejournal.com profile] mendel also use it and seem to like it. It's open source and has lots of quite good plugins. Downside: PHP. But you don't have to get your hands dirty.

I assume spammers are already signing up to Vox and leaving spam comments while real people are left in the cold.

1am drinking on a school day - arggh.

There's a geek drinking event on tomorrow but that's probably not leet enough for you.

I'm amazed you haven't got your deposit back. I suppose you left too soon to not give him the last month's rent.

ROFLMAO

What an idiot! I'm absolutely sure that Harvard will know that he got his essays from Wikipedia or anywhere else if they ever get a chance to look at them. There is software to check for plagarism y'know.

He might just have to get a real edumakation.

Err, spam that is. Plenty of legitimate activity though.

Vox does let you also post to LJ but it only sends a portion of the post to the LJ and then offers a link to the rest of the post on Vox, but at least people can comment on your LJ if they want to. Vox also lets you post more than one photo from your flickr or photobucket accounts and choose the layout of the post too. It will let you upload and watch a good variety of videos.

Another "walled garden" which is terribly fun but a bit young, is Cyworld. I mention it because it is fun, feature packed, easy to use and nicely designed, but not what you need. I also mention it because I just updated the miniroom and I want people to see it so I don't feel guilty about wasting a whole afternoon on making it pretty instead of studying: http://us.cyworld.com/ladystardust :P It lets you upload lots of photos and
videos and any other files too. It is a huge hit in Korea and wants to replicate that in the US market. It shits all over MySpazz. MySpazz sucks but I'm sure you know that.

What is interesting is what Photobucket and Flock have put together lately. They now have the option of posting to LJ, GJ, DJ (including any communities you have posting access to)and typepad and Friendster too I think. If you get the flock browser you can have access to one of your photobucket and flicker accounts at a time plus be able to see all new items uploaded to your friends' photobucket folders. Then you can pinch the photos and put a copy of them directly on your own account without having to download and then upload again. That features doesn't work too well with a Mac but it's fine with PCs.

Now that all sounds really good but I haven't been able to work out how to actually make any of the posts let alone do any mass simultaneous postings. Perhaps you can work it out. I just haven't had the time or interest.

I've heard that MovableType is the real l33t thing and has been for years. I'm stuffed if I can use it though. Just haven't got the time or interest to set it up all customised and stuff.

I rather like the community on Tribe.net and although it doesn't let you post to or from other places it does offer other little gadgets to link your Tribe.net friends with friends elsewhere but it doesn't work with LJ because it's flash.

And don't forget the original Blogger. It's a bit of a bastard if you want to customise the look of it but there are worse ones for that. I haven't checked them out for a few years so I'll just bet they have lots of new widgets and things to make it more nifty by now.

I had a custom script I used for it. It did Advo and email automatically, but I never got around to putting LJ in there since LJ::Simple is anything but, so in fact I was copy-pasting for a little while there before I gave up and just went all-LJ.

If you ever plan to do something similar, take a look at [livejournal.com profile] mendel's recent post about Google issues with cross-posting blog entries.
