I spent the week to date ill, so for Mothering Sunday Freda gave arkady a framed photo of herself (redcountess and I interpreting Freda's directions telepathically) and I did housework — kitchen, washing, caustic soda down the blocked drain — and looking after Freda for her. And tonight we're having takeout, dammit.

Liz's labret piercing has been looking icky for a few days, and this morning it was bad enough to take to A&E. Thankfully it was easily removed and didn't seem infected. But woe to the loss of a vestige of punk rock! At least she still has the nose ring. And is going to Apocalyptica on Friday and various other aging post-punk icons over the coming months. Motörhead stickers on our Zimmer frames and all.

Well, it's the first of the month and $2,200 is a big chunk of cash, so it seems perfectly normal for that to be a problem. Banks don't have a bottomless reserve of cash. If they were at the end of a cash delivery and about to get a fresh delivery, they wouldn't announce it, just to keep some dude from getting pissed.

I wonder if they were giving the correct reason... There's a limit of about $A2000 for cash withdrawals/cheque cashing to cash in Australian banks unless you pre-notify (but the larger ones can usually do it anyway).

Yes, I have withdrawn more than that and walked around Adelaide with $4000 in a (large husband's) pocket, why do you ask?

I'd need more info on the bank thing. Such as, the size of the actual bank (are we talking a huge bank like WaMu (Washington Mutual) or a small town bank), the location of the branches (small rural area or large city), demographics of the area (place where people use the bank to cash paychecks or place where people actually us it for checking and savings) etc... All of that does matter. If it's a small local bank in a rural area that does a lot of cash checking of paychecks then I would be worried about THAT bank, but not the economy as a whole. If it's a large bank like WaMu in a large city where a lot of people primarily do have checking and savings accounts, I'd be a little worried. In the end, this could also have just been a manager being lax on ordering the appropriate amount of cash or something and would think twice about doing business there.

Saturday = no cash delivery, or they may have simply been being lazy or whomever had the keys to the vault wasn't there yet. Or it may have been a really small branch. (Like, a supermarket outpost or something.) I wouldn't say it's normal, per se, but it's not really unheard of either. I've had problems cashing a $3K check (they did it, but I had a heck of a lot of ones.)

I've found that, when attempting to cash a check/cheque/bail of beaver skins worth over $1000, it's a good idea to notify the bank in advance to make sure that they have enough cash, especially with small branches of said bank.

it's just after the end of the month, so I would expect that they've been caching a lot of cheques for people who have just been paid. Also, [most] people do not seem to have large sums of cash: my wife only has a couple of dollars change in her purse for weeks on end, using her debit card for almost every purchase (even a cup of coffee), the US really is rapidly heading towards a cashless economy. At most bars and coffee shops people run tabs, leaving their credit card clipped to their tab behind the bar/counter.

federal law only clicks in with sums over $10,000 where there is an anti-money laundering provisions and additional id is required.

re: banks -- the actual ability to print money is not really tied to our recent economic woes (ron paul's rants aside) so yeah, I'd guess it's a localized banknote delivery issue.

It's a lot less irritated now but the hole doesn't seem to have closed over, so I might go into Cold Steel tomorrow and see if they can put another bar in. All is not lost!
