Bloody Ubuntu alphas. This time I tried 6.06 (working) to 8.04 (working) to 9.04 (broken again the same way). Currently reinstalling 8.10. Here's hoping 9.04 final works, or I try Fedora. KDE 4.2 does install to 8.10 if you ask it nicely (and know how to kick apt, which means "don't do this unless you aspire to become a Debian admin").

Firefox is indeed faster in Wine than native Linux — but the fonts are bloody hideous.

For my birthday, I got a steak dinner, socks, socks and more socks (stripy Camden socks, which I actually wanted), a beer glass, two six-packs of Cooper's and a chocolate, coffee and toffee cake. Looking forward to Sunday.

I was very happy when i discovered my local pound shop was doing stripy long socks and bought 8 of them!

There's a stall in the high street (Walthamstow High Street, a two-mile stretch of Burberry print and designer knock-offs) that does three pairs for a fiver, that's my usual source.

The local pound shop seems to have them in and out of stock, so it's worth keeping an eye out.

Yesterday they had just one pair of red and black ones, the others were multicolour, which I thought would be a bit too...Seventies for D's taste :)

Poundland in the shopping centre sells stripey socks. I've bought neon yellow ones there in the past.

I won't be able to make it - engineering works on the train line this weekend so can't really get anywhere without spending two hours hopping on and off buses.
