Trapped at home on call until Monday morning. [livejournal.com profile] syringavulgaris is in the UK tomorrow, going home Monday. (Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] sbp!) Bah!

Saw a girl on the tube with a Get Hip Records bag. I told her I approved. I'm contemplating my own half a ton vinyl albatross rather less cheerfully. I want rid of the damn thing. This involves (a) a lot of ripping vinyl to digital (b) getting rid of the physical objects.

Quite a lot of it is indie rock which is literally unavailable in the world except on a thousand pieces of vinyl, so the right place (after preserving the music) would probably be a library who cared, which would mean in Australia, with me donating the shipping as well. Anything in the vinyl pile that exists on CD can bugger off. A few things (not more than a few crates) I'll want to keep. That takes care of most of it, I think. I'm sure I'll get all this done before I die.

There's a lotta cassettes to rip too.

Lovely date with [livejournal.com profile] nyecamden last night. Most cheering.

Wow, that is a long gap!

Only other time I've seen such was when my systems date told LJ it was 1985.

Oh, and remember when you were asking for contact information for hate mail? Go forth and do what thou wilt.

Re: Blog Of Helios?
The story's a bunch of BS. Never happened. It's not the first time this guy has published outlandish stories on his blog without a shred of verification.

{hoists beer in general direction of Great Circle route to UK}

Yes, big pile of vinyl here too, weighing down on the good intentions to get it digitized one of these days. So far I've proven that the sound card in my ancient laptop sucks and can't take line level from the stereo. And when the vinyl is done, there are cassettes. At least I don't think I still have any 8-tracks.

I am of the opinion HeliOS is yanking peoples chains. He is the same guy who claims some months ago a teacher emailed him accusing him of breaking the law by distributing Linux and his patronising reply supposedly upset her and mobilised /. and etc

Funny two extreme, anti Linux things have happened to him to prove his point so recently innit. That might be because he is MAKING IT UP.

Do please let me know how you end up solving the vinyl storage problem. I'd like to do that too, not to get rid of it (NOOOOOOOOO!!!! MY BABIES!) but to make it easier to listen to away from home. I want a good storage system, though.

Your music library idea is wonderful - why not donate some of the less rare ones to some community projects? I have heard about a coupe - similar to the Zine Library in the Crampton St Infoshop - in London, but more than that I couldn't say.

Oh yeah, and I *really* want to know about the cassettes - I've got some irreplaceable old goth & indie demos there that I don't want to lose.

They've really paid attention to the slow blogging manifesto. Post only when there's news and the report is ready.

About this vinyl... I could give it a home. Actually, I barely have space for all the crap I already own, but I'd hate to see it... disappear.

I command you to do an mp3 blog like this:
http://phoenixhairpins.blogspot.com/

However, even if you rip your vinyl to FLAC (e.g. 16bit 48hz) today, someday in the future you may regret have the vinyl to re-rip to 48bit 96hz, etc., etc.)
