LessWrong meeting on Sunday 2nd was jolly fun. Really smart people sitting around talking erudite rubbish. I have homework.

Packing up [personal profile] redcountess' stuff to send back to Australia, and slightly our own to move to a house without a collapsing floor. Filling many a garbage bag along the way. All stuff constitutes a white elephant unless and until proven otherwise. I have thrown out several dead laptops and cameras, according to the rule of "generally useful is not the same as specifically useful" and distinguishing "actually useful" from "seems useful", which I shall now term "usefuloid." BEWARE THE PSEUDO-USEFUL. There's almost room in the lounge!

I always feel like I've missed something. I suppose that's what I get for not paying attention :D

We have done that. I have spasms of "get it OUT! OUT!" periodically and our house is better.

Good grief, a total Whitehouse collection. The soundtrack to my nightmares. I should probably point [personal profile] fluffymormegil, just in case there are any gaps in his undoubtedly extensive hateful noise library.

But I'd rather have Robbie Williams for 100 years than have to listen to Whitehouse for an hour...

You don't necessarily have to hang around at home for that hour whilst it's playing though. I once got the point across to a noisy neighbour by queuing up about 3 hours of Cradle of Filth on my PC and leaving it playing whilst I went out shopping. When I got back there was complete silence from the neighbour, and I had peace and quiet from that quarter the rest of the time I lived in that particular apartment.

Hm. Could get messy if there's an escalation in sonic warfare though; what if the neighbour starts performing "I Will Always Love You" on their home karaoke machine to retaliate?

(There was a noise nuisance case about a woman who was obsessed with that song, IIRC.)

The size of my hateful noise library is a function of what the listener considers "hateful noise" :)

You said when you visited that you wanted to make the most unlistenable record ever. While I regard that as quite an impressive challenge, I have to assume that the point of that would not be to cheer, relax or soothe your potential audience :-)

I'm genuinely surprised they weren't using Whitehouse at Guantanamo - or at least, not as far as we know. That'd break a man in 10 minutes...

If there happens to be a double male VGA cable in the white elephant pile with a length under 5m, I have a good home for it.

Cheers! I look forward to hearing a yay/nay.

We've just bought a 5m one to hook the laptop up with the TV, and the TV doesn't acknowledge the PC as being connected.

The font o all wisdom that is other clueless sods like me on the 'net suggests that it may be to do with the cable length being too long - hence the plea.
