My parents are trade unionists. They taught me to negotiate from an early age, a skill which has stood me in good stead. Want a later bedtime, or more pocket money? What chores will you do to get it? Think you already do enough chores? Demonstrate the benefit to the household.

Indeed. Brains and knowledge are one thing; learning to do deals with other people effectively is quite another.
