[personal profile] redcountess is back online! She got the Huawei E160E from Optus ($149 including 2GB data — this appears a reasonable price), called tech support for the settings and it Just Worked with Ubuntu 9.04. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mjg59 for the initial tipoff.

Of course, unlocking it for general use when she gets back to the UK will be another matter ... how are dodgy high street phone unlockers with 3G dongles?

[personal profile] arkady and I are trying to be more productive at home. I've been fielding pimp calls at a most gratifying rate. One day the washing will dry. The caffeinated strawberry plants are getting HUGE. Must remember to eat the strawberries (give 'em another month).

[livejournal.com profile] nyecamden should be hijacking me tomorrow afternoon, at which point we wander the streets aimlessly like dissolute youth. Saturday 2pmish, Arkady and I meet up with [livejournal.com profile] maxcelcat at the Pembury — anyone else likely to be about?

this is London, and ooh look, I don't care

I don't think dongles as such are locked.

The one I'm using with an optus reseller is branded vodaphone.

Probably. Before or after all-roads-lead-to-hell-in-a-handbasket? I'm not having that conversation. Ben Goldacre is far more fun.

Been looking into it myself as the new Vodafone PAYG looks good as it doesn't run out in 30days (have yet to get a reply about how long it does last though) though is more expensive per GB than 3.

I'll be in Hackney on Saturday, meeting some friends. Might make it to the Pembury, depends on timing.

Have a fabulous rest of week & weekend either way! :)

Kx

The "Heaven-o" story is 12 years old now. I wonder when they stopped doing it.

At least here in Vienna a couple claim "we unlock it, or you don't pay (and if we brick it, you'll get an unlocked one anyway)".
