Seconded. The connection here at my work is an insanely fast dowload 100MB in seconds thing and even here those pages take ages to load.

Potentially it's because velvet.net's on the end of a bit of damp string. Or gets LJed every time you upload another pile of gratuitous cleavage pix.

There should be a way of lashing up some cheap&nasty Inktomi-alike...

ServerIrons do ugly things with DNS dependant on RTT to requester, IIRC... You could preload that somewhat by using a not-terribly-round-robin DNS with weightings based on precomputed (ie - pull it from ARIN & RIPE) geo-data... Ok, that would blow up big-style with someone like AOL, but fuck them. Probably need to factor in pipe-size, too... Wouldn't have to be quick since you'd be doing it in the upper layers...
