It's interesting watching the social networks reform themselves on DreamWidth. I'm somewhat surprised that the first one I'm seeing reform en masse is the BOFHs. Many of whom I lured to LJ in the first place. Though the bi-polys are catching up.

[personal profile] redcountess is out seeing Coraline with Neil Gaiman doing a talk.

It's a lovely evening! I just took Freda down the shops.

One day we will have a toilet that doesn't have an infinitely deep gateway to the underworld in the floor.

Yer a sick fuck.

That's because Russ asked us on BOFHnet.

Many of whom I lured to LJ in the first place.

Oh, so it's *your* fault!

Though the bi-polys are catching up.

Hrmph. I couldn't possibly comment.

One thing I don't quite understand - er, well, *why*?

I have a VOX a/c I never use. I have Blogger IDs and so on, just for commenting, tho' OpenID is making that less & less necessary.

But what's the point of yet another LJ-codebase blogging site? Between LJ, Vox, DeadJournal, GreatestJournal, etc. etc., I see no actual use in the extras...

I hope you're goddamned ashamed of yourself!

Wine on MinGW

MinGW is not a complete subsystem - it's the GNU tools ported to Windows, to build software that uses them natively. With more or less source patching. There is an optional shell, MSYS, which is derived from Cygwin.
The main problem here is X11 libs. The donation-paid version of Xming comes with Xlibs, but not the free version (see the build notes and you'll see what he wants a donation for). Compiling X11 in MinGW is fraught, as it really stresses what a POSIX implementation can supply.
Status
Current results are not great.

DavidGerard tried:

* install mingw
* install msys - http://www.mingw.org/wiki/msys
o MSYS 1.0.10 (.exe)
o MSYS DTK (.exe)
o MSYS Core 1.0.11 (tarball - you can untar it from inside MSYS)
* install from MSYS base system http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2435&package_id=24963
o bash
o coreutils
o m4
o autoconf, automake, libtool - these need updating from the DTK versions! Need autoconf 2.57 or higher for X11.
o bison
o flex
o regex
./configure --without-x --without-freetype runs, make depend bombs out with:
...
../../../tools/makedep -C. -S../../.. -T../../.. cred.c crypt.c crypt_lmhash.c crypt_md4.c crypt_md5.c crypt_sha.c lsa.c registry.c security.c service.c

I posted a long message about this to alt.poly which is probably a better answer, but the short answer on the non-technical side is http://www.dreamwidth.org/legal/diversity.bml and they really mean it.

The short answer on the technical side is that they're actually running an open source project in a meaningful way.

I think I may have originally found LJ myself from someone in the monastery.
