Married now. (waves ring around) redcountess is wonderful. arkady is now promoted from girlfriend to mistress. Thirty-odd wonderful people at the ceremony, forty-odd wonderful people at the reception. The Bell loves us and would like us to get married every month. 119 photos on arkady's camera.

I got married three and a half years ago. It's very good. So far the three best things have been:

1. Instantly becoming a member of my wife's family. This more than doubled the number of my relations whom I actually like and get on with. Which is very cool. (Her octogenarian parents are old-school socialists who have run theatres and film clubs all their lives; the others are all pretty much as cool, ex-hippies, Trainspotting fans, sculptors, that kinda thing.) I hadn't really thought about the change in my relationship with them, but I think it was perceptible on both sides the moment we were legally wed.

2. Somewhat later that day, filling up my mate's pub with a 50/50 mix of goths and relatives to listen to a 50/50 mix of an industrial DJ set and a fantasy folk rock band (not at the same time). Choicest comment, made by a very young member of Bridie's family on seeing two heavily made-up goth blokes canoodling at the bar, was "Mum! Mum! There's two lesbians snogging at the bar!" I smoked a very large cigar and drank Herculeanly. Later still I snogged almost everyone I knew in an enormous mound of bodies on the sofa of New Aeon Books.

3. About a week later, adultery! This was great fun, a brand new sin I'd never tried before. Lovely.
