Summer Dress in Knightsbridge for Ladies of Leisure: there is no outfit so glamorous or elegant that it can't be utterly sabotaged by wearing flipflops. I realise this is the District of Inelegant Footwear, but WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

[livejournal.com profile] redcountess will be going into the IND in person to get her application to stay in the UK put through quick smart. So I got some photos done. I look like a criminal who is particularly pleased with himself. Which means it will look like my passport, on which (so my mother says) I resemble the third Kray twin.

[livejournal.com profile] redcountess and I had a lovely weekend in, despite both being ill. The back yard is actually nice to sit in now. Lunchtime visits from [livejournal.com profile] arkady today and tomorrow, and then off to St. Albans in the evening, health permitting.

Given the prospect of this, may I just mention my air-conditioned office, with a server room that is climate-controlled at 20°C and 39% humidity. Even if getting here does involve the Victoria broiler. British industry needs to realise the Australian lesson that air-conditioning is a plot to get people to show up at work.

Hmm. Perhaps that link should be to a story about how hot it's going to be this week, not to my LJ?

Umm, that link doesn't seem to work properly.
When I click on it on my friends page it goes to my LJ, and when I click on it here in the comments view it goes to yours...?

That's what happens when you forget to fill in the URL prior to posting, because you end up with '<a href="">this</a>' in the HTML, which points at the current page.

He'll fix it in a minute, I'm sure. </hint> :)

The scary thing about British summertime is the effect it has on fashion in the leg department!

My lovely day out yesterday was ruined by the sight of so many shorts/dresses with cruddy socks and sandals combos - eeew!

what's the problem? I don't own any, but it is much better to see them wearing flipflops than stilletos, which are a real pain.

Flipflops can be not bad - it's people walking flat footed and thinking they're not that's the problem. And *insert rant about fashion clothes being made to look stupid and destroy creative hopes here*.

I love flipflops!!! I have a zillion. That being said, I've never worn a pair in England. The "living at the beach" mentality of other places I've resided was what began the flipflop obsession. My 'everyday' pair is a 1 inch wedge, brown leather upper that are nice, not crappy rubber thongs. they look good with pretty much anything and show off my pretty toes :)

"Obviously, safety comes first but many people will be asking why our rail network can't cope with what is, after all, a relatively mild climate," [Hounshan] said.

35C+ and sunny means rails at 50C or 60C, 70+ degrees warmer than their low operating temperature. That means rails that are 70+ degrees of heat expansion *longer* than they usually are, in the same space. And, I don't doubt, that that's right up against the top margins of what the railbeds were designed for. One does NOT want to be in a 100mph carriage and hear a *SPANG* as an outside curve rail decides to act out its life goal to become a javalin.

"relatively mild climate" may mean that the extremes are rare, not that they never happen.

flipflops are bad.
My funky, flat, comfy, velcro-strappy walking sandals are, however, good.
They must be cool, [livejournal.com profile] ciphergoth has a pair just like them.

I was unable to find any decent sandals for under £30 here, so asked my mother to send my surf sandals (which sound similar to yours) over, as I'd forgot to pack them. So even though I probably looked really daggy at the wedding in them, I was very comfortable :-)

I only have nice sandals that cost under £30 (only just) because I bought them in France. The least repulsive ones I could find here were about £40.

British industry needs to realise the Australian lesson that air-conditioning is a plot to get people to show up at work.

Very much a feature of life in Toronto as well. During one heat wave, one of my flatmates spent a lot of extra time at work, as her car got too hot to get into until about 8:00 pm. I took to spending an hour walking home (popping into air conditioned shops occasionally on the way) as that was less unpleasant than 15 minutes on the subway.

Hello :) Your name came up on my list of "closest 50 non-friends" (which can be generated at http://www.gothboffs.co.uk/trustflow/trustflow.pl) so I thought I'd say hello. I'm always looking to meet new people. Mind if I add you to my friends list?
