I would rather work than go to a fucking office Christmas party. I'm not around you people or this place by choice.

Nice pubbing. The Princess Louise is a Sam Smith pub, so the real beer is sorta crappy but, at £1.66 a pint, cheap enough to put up with. Coincidentally bumped into [livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren and [livejournal.com profile] wechsler, who were meeting Karen's brother there before dinner. [livejournal.com profile] ali_anarres showed and I returned her Perl book and we talked about her fantastic nu meeja job. [livejournal.com profile] allezbleu finally made it out of Hollywood and we had a lovely catch-up. And saw [livejournal.com profile] wintrmute for a few minutes at the end.

One (1) quick pt. became four, but these things happen.

Our overseas Christmas cards are done and posted, only slightly late.

Exactly my sentiments. As if we don't spend ENOUGH time with those people every day. As if you are not dying to get AWAY from them at the end of the day/week. Jeez. And then they look at you funny in the office when you say exactly that and that you want to see your friends or go to a gig instead. Weirdos.

That's certainly how I felt about all the Ericsson ones. You seemed pretty comfortable and willing to be there for the one you were around for...

Office Christmas parties are now something for me to look forward to: most of my group avoids the more general ones, and we go off to University House for a fabulous lunch and wine-snob session. Takes the whole day.

That's how I spent my first day there, and that's how I'll be spending next Friday, too.

Ah. OK. I hated them because even though there were people there I liked, they were a tiny minority. And, well, of those one tended to avoid me, another hadn't quit intimidating me with her appearance until right at the end, and the last didn't work there until the final year.

I usually got stuck with the Prince of Mediocrity, and his soul-brother our boss the PhD.

(Hm, actually, Maks was OK too, but that's about it. I think I was a bit busy being jealous because I thought he was getting somewhere with Sappho.)

Now I like all of my co-workers enough to be happy spending one day a year being sociable.

I haven't written anything that the people concerned don't know anyway, so I'm not bothered.

Luckily my department is so big there are several Christmas parties. The main one is the Christmas Ball, a formal affair which the academics, post-docs and post-grad students tend to go to. I'd end up punching several wankers if I went to this. I go to the party for the support staff which is mostly techs and office staff.

Whereas the other office staff at our place have finally stopped inviting me to their christmas meal/ party. It's inevitably somewhere hideously expensive, (because most of them live at home or have a man who supports them), awful, and I can't even stand being around most of them at work.

The ones I do like are the other ones who don't go because they don't want to blow that much money on a night out with people they can't stand.

I am working instead of the Christmas party! Both our offices are shutting down at noon so everyone can go do the party thing, but I'm staying behind to do data recovery on our extremely fried fileserver.

Wheeee! (And I mean it.)
