MY FUCKING GOD I HATE WINDOWS AAAAAAAAGGGGHHH FUCK.

I'm currently demonstrating the definition of "true love" by reinstalling XP on the PC belonging to the older teen, at the request of [personal profile] arkady, her mother. This is because Windows 7 RC mostly worked straight off the DVD, except sound. Update: Turns out the sound cable wasn't attached to the board! It works better now it's plugged in.

I have found the use case where Windows 7 clearly beats XP and you would benefit from buying it! It’s when you’re reinstalling a supar-l33t gaming rig with rare and custom drivers galore. XP can't find the drivers either, and at least Win7 mostly works instead of mostly not working.

It turns out this is because it's her dad’s old gaming rig (2004-2005 vintage), which has ridiculously custom hardware that was l33t of the l33t four years ago and is now in the "legacy" section on the nVidia and ATI websites. I was reduced to looking at PCI IDs in the Hardware Manager and Googling on the magic numbers (perhaps I shoulda Bung) to work out what half this crap was.

Oh, and frequent MACHINE_CHECK_ERROR bluescreens, even with the CPU and memory clocked at half speed. That's an error message that means "stop overclocking so much you smelly nerd" or "your l33t hardware is wearing out from heat stress." In this case it'll be the latter. Said loved one can reseat all the cards and RAM, I've done my day on this thing. I killed most of a £3 bottle of petrol-flavoured red wine on the Windows Drinking Game.

One more virus and she gets Ubuntu whether she likes it or not ...

Exercises in temper control: not striking down teen with lightning from above when she calls James Brown "chav music."

Imagine how much eyerolling from the teen there would be to find out that news:alt.gothic recently had an in-depth discussion of the relative merits of Lady Gaga and Lady Sovereign, and their roles in gender identity of contemporary yoof.

Lady Gaga and Lady Sovereign have *merits*?

Surely Lady Gaga would be more goth by default? (Well, there are the vaguely fetishy romo/electro stylings she adopts in her photo shoots, but these days, such sets of subcultural references are ring binders on the shelves of marketing types).

How about a $20 (sorry, my Yank keyboard doesn't have the key for Pounds Sterling, but $20 is a better deal than 20 Pounds :P) PCI sound card? Just an ordinary SoundBlaster compatible card that is supported by Windows 7 and XP?

Just be glad you're not installing Vista. That is all I have to say on that matter. Or just go ahead and install Ubuntu. Or since she's a teen, Hannah Montana Linux (http://hannahmontana.sourceforge.net/Site/Home.html).

James Brown as "chav music" shocked me to the core. If there were chavs back then, surely they were far classier than today's chavs. o_0

Funny you mention it. We're finalizing the OEM release copy at work (Dell-hell) and I'm (for a Linux person) sort of happy with it. It is to Vista and XP what Win2K was to ME and 95. Almost a direct repeat of history there. The RC is a big bug-assed. If your rig were a Dell I could unload this on you, but w/o a servicetag in the bios, it would not play ball.

Drivers - use the Vista ones and you'll fly. Did it with multiple machines under the last RC and that covered me for drivers.

To be fair, the TCP issues are basically fundamental to the protocol. There's no plan to patch the Linux kernel to work around them - we're just documenting sensible firewall setup to mitigate the kinds of access patterns that might trigger them. I don't think this is a case of Microsoft doing the wrong thing.

There's the DoS aspect, which is fundamental to the protocol and you'll never get rid of, and there's the part where you can actually crack open the Windows TCP/IP stack and run remote code execution exploits.

I'm assuming the latter is not in the Linux kernel, or at least, I'd be very surprised.

CVE-2009-1925 (the arbitrary code execution) only applies to Vista and 2008.

Ah, fair enough then.

Assuming Microsoft aren't lying about the state of their source code. They probably aren't, but who knows. :-)

Exercises in temper control: not striking down teen with lightning from above when she calls James Brown "chav music."

Recently, WXRT has had in pretty heavy rotation a new song by Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears called "Sugarfoot" that I swear they musta dug up James Brown to record. Played it for the old folks at the bar, and it was uniformly well-received. Might want to check that out.

> she calls James Brown "chav music."

I wonder if this is because of all the times James Brown has been sampled that his music is seen as "common"

For the record I am a big fan of Ubuntu, and not of Windows, but my main Ubuntu desktop does crash too every few days. I suspect that it is hardware related as it often involves using the usb scanner. But the machine also records tv for me and I think that may be part of the problem.

Just how custom can it be? I can't think of any discrete sound card that shouldn't work in Windows 7 or Vista, and Creative eventually sorted out their shitty drivers. All Creative's stuff has drivers as does the Xonar series. Everything else is either ridiculously pro audio and not games oriented at all or generic and supported by everything.

Personally I hate the fact that modern 'R&B' is, in fact, deeply shitty hip hop and not Proper R&B as performed by messrs Brown, Franklin and Hooker.. Tarred with the same brush, I presume.
