Unemployed life continues. Much thanks to all those emailing me tipoffs on jobs, do please continue. Today I did an online test to bring a broken Tomcat installation up. Marvellous fun, with several clever red herrings along the way. (No doubt simulating abortive past attempts at moving stuff without bothering to clean up. Not that such things were a regular feature of my last job.) The bonus question led me to wonder (again) why no-one ever thought it a good idea to make bash able to just cope with lines ending ^M^J.

arkady has a cold. redcountess is off to Walhalla with the other crusty old goths. nyecamden and I have been going out for a year, which is both surprising and pleasing.

If it's bash that's having difficulty interpreting the ^M as intended and not an arguably more important piece of software, then you got the less fun version of that. I got the more fun version, not as a test but as an unexpected part of a small contract job, back before my First Real Job even.

I had three days of trying to work out why the hell a cron job wouldn't run. It was a Red Hat AS 2 system. Can you see what it is yet? ... 1. Script written on Windows, FTPed as binary. 2. RHAS text editor is vim, which tells you it's a DOS file when you open it and then stops warning you.

What was higher up the stack that barfed on a ^M?
