I visited [livejournal.com profile] severina_242 today, and it was utterly wonderful to see her again after two years apart. [livejournal.com profile] tcpip was around too. Q. What's the nerdiest possible way to hold broken glasses together? A. A big black blob of epoxy. Which then breaks anyway after your girlfriend sticks her finger on the lens.

Road trip! When I got back, Liz and I got in the car and drove and drove and drove. We looked at her old house in Reservoir, drove down Sydney Road with a diversion to the tram depot (photos for [livejournal.com profile] poggs, of course — we're not train spotters, no no, that's our friend), then past Liz's aunt's old house in Moonee Ponds, through Footscray to each present our middle fingers to VUT, Altona Memorial Park to see her Nanna and Pop's markers, then back along the bay from Altona, through Williamstown (where I backed into a fence and ran up at least one panel's damage on the hire car. BUGGER.) and back through the city to the supermarket. Where we bumped into [livejournal.com profile] heathen. Then back to the house where [livejournal.com profile] hestia was visiting with baby William. We are Utterly Buggered.

I am scanning more of Liz's old photos. Bribes will be accepted from [livejournal.com profile] smilesnspiders; she knows why.

Tomorrow we check into the hotel. If their promised 'data port' is in fact an Ethernet socket we can plug into, grab an address and be connected via, we'll be online a bit more. If not, we will be decidedly intermittent.

Update: If the 'data port' does turn out just to be a phone connection ... anyone in Melbourne got a PC card modem we can borrow for a coupla weeks? Post or phone!

You might find that it's a port to plug your laptops' modem into. If you have one...
If you don't, go on the scrounge locally for one. You'll need a dialup account too, you can go on the scrounge for that as well :)

Hotel data ports are usually phones with a jack you can plug your dialup modem into.

Unless they say they have broadband, you can assume that they don't.

If your laptop has a serial port, I have a few decent external modems. I'm sure I could dig one up.

(Got two Netcomm v.90 Roadsters sitting in the junk pile somewhere...)

Hmm, need a BOFHbof.

Somewhere other than the Builders, eh?

I'm really not up for a pub evening. A reasonable restaurant, however... Perhaps the Phantom on Swanston St? Got a bottle-shop next door and heaps of pubs nearby for those as want them, and ISTR the food and service being quite good.

Would that be the same Severina who used to live in Adelaide in the latter part of the '90s?

Hey, I'm not a trainspotter either... but it will be good to see what the trams look like down under!

I don't really care what they look like.

I'm an infrastructure geek.
