Camerapunk and the race against time.

ali_anarres enjoyed an attack of Camden today. Amongst other things, she got herself some poi.

The pics are a mix of 50 ASA and 400 ASA - the blur with the former actually works quite well with poi twirling.

The process: Images extracted from camera. Two turned sideways with jpegtran -rotate 90. Run through a script which does (more or less) jpegtopnm | pnmscale 0.3125 | pnmconvol sharpen3.pnm | pnmtopjeg (where sharpen3.pnm is a convolution matrix I found). Run through a simple index page script, tart a little in Mozilla Composer. scp to Velvet. The result.

(Still needed: something to ascertain the height and width of a JPEG from the command line. rdjpgcom -verbose is almost there, but not quite.)

I can see myself putting up a page of netpbm scripts, recipes and convolution files. Just because.

Geek quotient:

Does your camera have settings to simulate different film speeds? I know mine is kind of iffy in the dark and I have seen other peoples pictures shot in clubs/gigs that have turned out mimuch better.

It does ISO/ASA 50, 100, 200, 400 or 'auto'. CCDs do in fact cope quite well with very low light - it might be grainy and noisy, but you'll get some sort of image. See the Dorkbot shots for ASA 400 in action.

Hard to tell off that. Do you have any from gigs etc? One of my pet hobbies is taking pics of gigs/clubs and afaik my camera (now a little long in the tooth) will only do ASA200. Hence a lot of my low light shots are smeered, which can on occasion look great, but mostly spoils the shots.

Haven't done any gigs with this camera yet, and the only nightclub shots I've done have been with the flash. (A few errors without the flash, but they didn't come out.) I think it'll do okay for gigs in many cases, actually - or ones with proper stage lighting at least, i.e. not the Dev.

Hehehe.. Playing with fire poi myself now, and set fire to them for the first time a couple of weeks ago.. There's nothing like the roaring noise when they swing past your head :)

Perl has been closely correlated with herpes. I want to do this my way.
