Your humble editor has been inducted into the WA Music Industry Association's Hall of Fame, owing to an unfortunate incident thirteen years ago involving a fanzine, much drink and eight hundred Perth music industry pigfuckers. Because sometimes, you've just gotta tell 'em.

([livejournal.com profile] redcountess will never forgive me for winning one when Bon Scott didn't.)

Actual article scan here (96KB). Emailed by my mother.

Update: I don't have details to hand in electronic form. I have the magazine, but it's not scanned. [livejournal.com profile] bar_bar_ella had it on the old version of her website, but it's the one page from the site that's not on the Wayback Machine. Paging Barbara!

Update 2: A fragment of a 1994 interview with Woozy:

8. A few years ago, you had a run‑in with the Perth music industry at their WAMI awards. Can you briefly tell us the story again, for those readers outside Perth who wouldn’t have heard what happened? Have you suffered any repercussions as a result of pointing out to those people what kind of parasites they are?

You mean the pig‑fucking kind? I got up to accept my award (for six years of PF) and said a few words on what the industry had done to music in this town. It was fun. I’m not sure the story can be told briefly — the Original Music Awards in 1986, collapse of the cover band industry in 1987, my own time on the WAM (then WARMIA) committee 1988 to 1990 (I was one of the people responsible for getting a Rock Awards up and running again from ‘89), the judging room for the 1991 awards just happening to be stacked with scenesters ... the fact that I deserved my award, that if I hadn’t let rip with what I really thought, I’d have been lying by omission ... I refer you to PF#17 (available for an SASE) if anyone really cares.

Will I ever do lunch in this town again? The only repercussion I heard about was that WAM couldn’t get sponsorship for the 1992 awards from the six major labels — as "punishment" (that was the word used) for letting me say what I had to say. Freedom of speech doesn’t apply in owned environments.

What you have to remember is that there is a bunch of ripoff cowboys who have branded themselves the "Music Industry" as if a collective name gives them social cachet. They're pimps and their aim is to whore music out, letting music have ten per cent of the take in exchange for its life. Without the Music Industry, music might exist. They’ll do lunch with anyone, even me, if a buck might be in it.

The most annoying response I get is young semi‑industry folk who tell me it was a "really stupid thing to do." If my aim is to build a resume, yeah ... unlike them, however, I have principles.

All this is a non‑issue; it’s two and a half years ago and I should have to do something new to get attention, like a great new PF or something.

Totally OT, but I love your icon! Rochester is the best thing about Plunkett and MacLeane, especially when he calls Plunkett a bit of rough ;-)

LOL
From what I heard what you said was better than any Michael Moore acceptance speech and more exciting than Tex Perkins getting drunk and punching guys out at the ARIAS.

Good on ya mayte!

Congratulations.

I didn't even see your name when I flicked through the paper yesterday.
And there you are - wedged between Bob Gordon and Genge.

*wipes tear from eye*

ah, what a night! I feel very privileged to have been there, amongst all those..what did you call them? eight hundred Perth music industry pigfuckers...I'm sure you're exempting me from that description...

oh, what a night it was! That and the night you got thrown out of the Jesus and Mary Chain gig make my two favourite 'David behaving badly' memories. Gawd knows someone had to stick it to them (WAMI, not JAMC)

I've attempted to elicit the juicy details from him, but apparently his memory is impaired by the fact that he was profoundly drunk the night in question.

<Arkady> Out of curiosity...what was the incident? :-)
<Diva> I can't find a text copy of the writeup on the speech itself
<Diva> 1. me, profoundly drunk.
<Diva> 2. 800 Perth music industry pigfuckers.
<Diva> 3. A microphone.
<Diva> you know me.
<Arkady> Hmm. I've never seen you actually *acting* profoundly drunk. And certainly not near a microphone. But I can probably guess.
<Diva> erm. it wasn't planned.
<Diva> but I did call them pigfuckers.

oh, he was totally offensive...proud of him, I was.

needless to say, I was a few 'bevvies' down myself and after all these years, details are patchy. but basically David said what we'd expect him to say: abused the lot of them.
