A one-second power spike took out every PC and the crappier Suns. The servers, including everyone's work storage and NT home — the backed-up storage where all business data is to be saved — were of course on UPS and unaffected. This showed up in the helpdesk mail soon after.

Customer : User, L
Requester : User, L

Type : Incident
Priority : Medium
Category : Desktop Computing/Hardware
Product : PC Desktop
Summary : Power outage
Detail : A few minutes ago at 14:41 there was a power outage on the 7th floor. All pc's were rebooted and some people lost work that had not been saved. Mr User wondered why there was no IT procedure to deal with this sort of incident. If there is such a procedure it did not work. This is seen as unacceptable. Mr User will like to receive an explanation on this matter.

I so wanted to write the reply email.

Users that wish to have uninterruptable power for their workstations will be issued pedal generators instead of mains plugs for their workstation equipment. These users shall be reminded that 100 revolutions per minute will be required through the course of thier workday to maintain 50 Hz of AC power and that sagging below this rate of pedaling may damage the equipment. Stations damaged in this way will be subject to reimbursement of the company from the user's pay.

We look forward to servicing you in this manner by no later than the end of the third quarter.

Mr User is welcome to transfer from his budget to the IT department's budget sufficient funds to cover the installation and maintenance of uninterruptible power to his desktop machine.
A budget summary for this work will be forthcoming soon and will be delivered to Mr User.
Justification of this expenditure by the Company is left as an exercise for Mr User.
We will await authorisation and a cost code to charge this work against.

The IT procedure is for Mr User to click the save button every five minutes! Or shall we pop around and do that for you too?
