The pimp calls continue to come fast and thick. "I'm in work now, which list did you see me as current on? No, I don't know anyone with [obscure buzzword] experience, sorry kthx BYE." Soon I will be refusing all ID-withheld calls and putting a message on my voicemail saying "Recruiters can just fuck off" in diplomat.

I am told Orange now do a phone which takes two SIMs. I'm amazed this isn't more widely advertised.

Two SIMs, or "line 2" (second line on the same SIM)?

... what about getting a PAYG SIM and giving that number to recruiters? I've got one for this purpose.

One of the female fencers at my club has had a "two-SIM handset" for a good while. One SIM is her "work mobile", the other is her "private mobile". She gets call to both, it presents caller and SIM and she can choose to answer or not (for the work SIM she only answers during working hours). Not sure how she selects outgoing SIM, but...

I can check when I see her next. Might be a while, though, due to the evil City Police wanting to use their big briefing room, thus cruelly displacing us from hitting people with swords.

I know they exist, they're rare though... a manufacturer will make one every few years.

I don't know what the deal is in the UK but I can't see someone like aussie telecom wanting to advertise that you could have a contract with someone else.
buy the phone on a contract and use a prepaid sim in it?

Multiple-SIM adapters for use in phones have been available for a few years now. Not seen them sold "as standard" before, though.

A friend of mine was talking about a "4 SIM" device. When you turn the phone on you have to select which SIM you want to make calls on, but it will receieve calls on any of them.

Sounds nifty, but I don't want to pay for 4 lines :-)

sounds sexy to me, though i really don't need it at the min. I wonder what its battery consumption is like.. and its brain microwave powers!

That *is* nifty.

It'd save my carrying two phones around. Hmm....

Indeed. I can see value in that. One for business, one for pleasure.

Maybe it's time to go to pay by the month - you can tell those people that matter that your number has changed and leave the pimps stone cold. Oh, and it's occurred to me that while you can't go from Voda payg to monthly and keep your number, they may be able to transfer your stored numbers across at their shop in Liverpool Street Station.

Hmm. This means I will have to get another Medic-Alert necklace - it has his current number engraved in steel, which isn't exactly changeable!

Hmm. Which colour this time - blue, do you think? But then I'd have to dye my hair blue to match...!

Mind you, if and when the Walthamstow CMHT ever get in contact with me, I may find myself with a psychiatrist who wants to play silly buggers with my meds again - which would necessitate a new tag anyway. I shall wait and see what happens there.

David shouldn't make his choice based on whether or not I have to get a new tag though!

Well I know lack of number portability is a big tick against going to monthly billing for him.

There are several Nokias that will take two SIMs, and have been for some time - the LUL Revenue Control Inspectors have them so they can put both their work and home SIMs in one phone instead of carrying two phones around with them everywhere. I'm not sure exactly which models they are or how they work though.

Reminds me, were any of the unix systems pimps you dealt with any good? If so which ones?

No, its not for me obviously...

Let me know if you find out what phone it is, I'd be interested.

When I was on orange and actively looking for a job I used their two-phone-numbers-on-one-SIM option. I think this needs phone support but it's more widespread than two actual SIMs. IIRC you could divert one to voicemail and not the other, and useful features like that.
