CMOT Diva's Laptoppe Shoppe has its first, so far satisfied, customer. [livejournal.com profile] tamaranth now has a NaNoWriMo toy of perfect form factor and portability which will be used to produce superlative works of pr0n historical fiction of tremendous literary value. No doubt if it breaks she'll enthusiastically tell you how much I suck. OpenOffice.org has a really fat arse but is otherwise better than MS Office in every way.

(If you're after a NaNoWriMo implement, get in touch. Two, maybe three, left! [livejournal.com profile] androktone, I haven't forgotten you ...)

[livejournal.com profile] tom_pusscat is now at our place and got two breakfasts out of us this morning. The mouse is long gone, but he can still smell it and sits on the kitchen floor, ready to pounce into action. He has also taken to curling up in [livejournal.com profile] redcountess's lap when she's geeking from bed.

This morning I went out to the colo again to supervise a memory module replacement. Of course, the guy was only there to see what sort of memory it wanted — there have been a zillion different machines sold with "DL580" on the front — the actual memory replacement will be done Monday. It's not like I've work to do or anything. Its urgency is reduced by the server in question not in fact being a perfect match to its working twin — someone has been playing musical cables and I now get to work out which Ethernet port on one box matches which port on the other. Which is at the other colo. I'm sure the boss will be thrilled. Both are running Red Hat AS 2.1; tips welcomed.

(There's eight ports on each box (DL580s running RHAS 2.1 as Oracle servers). Five are in use. The two should be set up absolutely identically. They're not, insofar as the cables are hooked up differently. Two on each go to the NetApps, one (or maybe two) goes to the backup network (172.19.0.0/16, unrouted even internally), one (or maybe two) goes to the rest of the world. I'm supposed to work out which pairs to bond. The boss is back on Monday ...)

Each ethernet port has it's own MAC address? If so, ping each address and check the arp table on one to the ifconfig output (as root) on the other. Then you'll know what logical ethernet port is what.

For physical, it will depend on if the port is busy or not, but if the activity LEDs are generally sporadic then large data transfers to cause the LED to be permanently on helps.

Assuming no one has done anything stupid to the hardware (eg swapped card order, plugged NICs into different slots) then the logical ordering of the ports should be consistent between the two machines (PCI can make life a pain, especially of the BIOS decides to lie). Working out what logical port does what should be simple. However, the mapping of logical to physical is harder; if you know what 5 of the 8 ports are active then you might be able to make a good guess on the physical layout.

I think I love you

...but that isn't news ;)

I grovel at your feet for the gift of the link to OpenOffice. I've now replaced my Much Clunkier (though not MS) ultra-crashy begware officesuite with this and played with it and been made happy. The begware was Enormous, had a tendency to crash just as I saved some important bit of blathering or budgetarty stuff, and really only had the advantage of not being MS...

Thank you again. I owe you drinks.
