This is the task list I wrote to get competent NT admins quickly up to speed on Solaris. It's not directly relevant to Linux and so on, or, indeed, many of your lives. But I prepared it for posting for [livejournal.com profile] zey, so thought I might as well make an entry of it. The idea is to start them on the PFY stuff and show them where the good stuff is.

Unix tasks to learn )

Your suggestions are welcomed. It needs better stuff, rather than more - the list is too long already. (The hardest part is teaching them to learn from those squiggles on a page or command line, rather than bright shiny pictures, ticky boxes and clicky buttons on a screen.) Generalised equivalents of the above, too.

And if they're not competent, the list above is sufficiently eminently reasonable that it'll be readily apparent to your mutual boss in short order.

Edit: Please, less vi flamewar and more useful NT admin herding tips!

reddragdiva: (gosh!)

An excellent [livejournal.com profile] kittenherder evening at the Head of Steam in Euston Station. [livejournal.com profile] ali_anarres, [livejournal.com profile] fluffymark, [livejournal.com profile] _nicolai_, [livejournal.com profile] marnameow, [livejournal.com profile] sbp, [livejournal.com profile] mstevens, [livejournal.com profile] mouseboks, [livejournal.com profile] chrysaphi, [livejournal.com profile] dizzy_fish, Mark and a late-arriving [livejournal.com profile] uon. I had five pints without dinner, accounting for my sociable condition. Heard about [livejournal.com profile] ali_anarres and [livejournal.com profile] fluffymark's new jobs, both of which they are very pleased with. We talked incredible quantities of geeky rubbish. I snogged [livejournal.com profile] fluffymark and am still wibbly about it. The place is nice enough and the beer is very good. I am now at home with my darling [livejournal.com profile] redcountess (who was absent because of the cold I think I'm getting) and very pleased with life.

I need more pubbing in my life. And more money for pubbing. And for [livejournal.com profile] redcountess to be well enough to pub too.

I now have an optical mouse of my own. It is that 'l33t. (Still don't know why it only works in one USB socket, not the other. This is on FreeBSD 4.6.2 on a Compaq AP400.)
