reddragdiva: (party)

I am on holiday! At a day's notice. This is because both I and my boss had to use up our holidays by the end of March and keep forgetting to take them. This is quite common where I work, leaving the place a ghost town in March, 'cos we all apparently love what we do. Also, everyone basically works for a living (and anyone who's worked anywhere ever knows how rare that is). I'm not sure how this fits into the Gervais theory, unless we're all clueless and we're short on sociopaths.

Wednesday night I tried to skim Lifehacker the book: 88 Tech Tricks to Turbocharge Your Day by Gina Trapani. I have a theory of user levels: technophobe, in-between, geek. Excellent technologies work well for "technophobe" and "geek" (e.g. LiveJournal, Mac OS X). Bad ones pitch to the wrong level. This book claims to be for the in-between but has technical prerequisites at geek level, thus setting up the precarious bucket of water above the door. Of course your typical Windows user will have no technofear from installing Cygwin just to automate a bloody to-do list (hack #2). Of course this person should also install MediaWiki in all its lardy glory, with Apache (configuring that for PHP) and MySQL along for the ride, just to keep a personal notepad (hack #4). Too simple for nerds, sets non-nerds up for disaster. I lasted twenty pages and put it down never to be picked up again.

I may or may not go to Reptile tomorrow. (I'm feeling particularly good about being down to 94kg, a weight I haven't seen since 2002. And I have a new camera to try out.) Anyone else?
