[livejournal.com profile] redcountess is going stir-crazy with no internet and a television with no couch. And her laptop is playing up as well. Still! Theoretical dialup from Friday! A cooker and a fridge should be arriving today! Some time or other! Now that I've called Comet and given them a working contact number! A nice BT person called this morning to confirm our appointment for Friday between 8am and 1pm. I explicitly checked that after said appointment, we will in fact have an active, working, usable phone line. Still can't give me a number of course.

The vile coffee at work is considerably nicer with milk rather than machine "whitener." Work are trying one of the Vodafone 3G/GPRS cards for the on-call laptops. We should theoretically have 3G coverage at home ... if this works around Kings Cross, then I can in fact go out to Rathaus :-D

That's weird. When I arranged my phone line they gave me the new number straight away....

That's truly ridiculous. The number they gave me was the number I got - none of this faffing around. I can only assume I got the only competent call-centre worker!

Have SMS'd Liz to see if she'd like company; she's just told me the gas fitter is there now and the fridge will be there later so I'll be off over there shortly. :-)

It could be dependant on what type of exchange you're on. I worked on System X exchanges for a while and I know the phone number (DN) on them has no physical to the line termination equipment, so they should be able to pick any free number on that exchange and allocate it to you well before any line is fitted.

I can't speak for other exchange types though - Strouger clearly had a physical relationship but I know nothing about AXE10, TXE4 etc.

I know it's a pain for her to get here so it probably doesn't help, but if she wants to come around and plug her laptop into our DSL she's welcome any time (except thursdays as we're both out thursdays).

I have a couple of those Vodafone 3G cards and an Orange one too... they are quite usable for most sysadmin tasks even when they drop down to GPRS speeds :)
