Retro-nerdery question: I am attempting to connect to work by callback. That is, I call the work modem, it authorises me then phones my modem back (so they pay for the phone call).

The catch with this is that while the call from me connects at about 45kbps, the call back connects at 4.8kbps!

How does one beat a modem into accepting only a higher speed for a callback?

(I am greatly relieved that this piece of deeply obscure information from my past life in ISP tech support has escaped my brane. Though the rest is coming back. OH FUCK I REMEMBER WHAT ATW2 DOES! *sporks own brain out*)

Update: Of course, the audible crackle on the line might also be a clue. And in any case, it's actually easier to use our present Wanadoo FRIACO dialup (no call charges) and VPN in over that. Eegh.

Depends a lot on the modem; you may want to look at register S36, which (IIRC) controls the lowest negotiated speed.

Is this at both ends?

It could matter...

I've also got some vague memories that some modems connect at speeds that match whatever the serial line is at when originating the call. Looking at the dialback script might be worth it, to ensure that HW andshaking is being used and that serial port speed is close to maxed.

I've got a glorious USR Courier V.everything sitting here that I really ought to get functional before the DSL decides it wants to play up.

I was going to think of something clever here, but I've been up wrestling with new gargantuan hard drives the past several hours, and the best I can come up with is:

~~~@!
Which seems like pure brilliance right now.
kill -hup brain
;)
You've reminded me how lucky we are to have broadband these days...where you set it going and then it gives the appearance of chugging-along at great speeds all by itself. So glad not to be labouring on a cheese-modem with the bandwidth of a piece of wet string.
Remember that you're not going to get above 33.6K in any case, due to the way 56K stuff works . On the other hand, 4.8K is pretty dreadful. Are you able to hear the negotiation in process?
If they're using analogue lines at their end, then the call back would normally be made on a different line (and modem) from the initial call in. So it could just be that one of their lines/modems is screwed or misconfigured.
