I am listening to Turn On The Bright Lights by Interpol, which is actually quite good. If it had been released in 1980 it would have been regarded as very promising.

Before it I listened to High by the Blue Nile, their fourth album in 20 years. It is indistinguishable from the second one (1988) except even duller. The first (1983) actually spawned several chart hits; this will never happen again.

I am home now until Tuesday 4th January, thank fuck, hopefully having time to make the house look less like we've just moved in. tom_pusscat is missing his mummy, but likes us because we feed him. Our Christmas tree is really good.

Yes, Turn On The Bright Lights was good; I picked it up belatedly in 2003, and it grew on me. It's better than the wave of derivative knockoffs that followed, like The Killers and The Futureheads and such (one could possibly add Franz Ferdinand to this list, come to think of it).

I still haven't picked up Antics, the follow-up, though.

There's a whole bunch of bands in this style. Gabrielle's Wish, for example, who I only discovered just after they'd split. Interpol are just the ones to strike it big.

Or perhaps Interpol just had the savvy business sense not to be ghettoised into a subcultural genre.

Nope. Manchester post-punk sounding band in the 1990s, when that sort of thing was unheard-of. Some releases on Rob's Records, which was Rob Gretton's label. There are MP3s somewhere on the Web.

Btw, speaking of Manchester bands, are you familiar with Marion? That's another band I heard good things about.
