Today I had my first face-to-face job interview of this round. The pay is at the bottom of my acceptable range and I would have to wear a tie, but the job looks quite interesting. The interview ran two hours and I babbled a bit, but there was rapport. We'll see.

This evening I had definitely the stupidest phone interview of my life: a technical Unix quiz of the "what command line would you use for this job" variety, obviously meant to be written, administered over the phone by a technically illiterate pimp who called both the slash and hyphen a "dash" and was hopelessly confused by the notion of a pipe. My brain hurt and my scalp tensed.

[livejournal.com profile] arkady is over again this evening. [livejournal.com profile] redcountess has been watching West Wing series 2. I have been slowly beating Liz's FreeBSD machine into working. (The OpenOffice 1.1.4 package is best installed with -f after you've installed ORBit from ports.) I have also installed the prerequisites for MediaWiki on my PC. Final payslip from old employer came today. Still looking for that unemployed ennui kthx.

I tend to favor koffice myself, it's available on whatever system KDE is.

I've always hated those things. In Unix, there are often many ways to skin a cat.

Jeez, you're an optimist.

"The guy mentioned pron as a way to schedule tasks. Wrong!"

"He threatened to kill me if I asked him how to shut down processes. Possibly insane."

"Mentioned something about topping himself when I asked how you'd check memory usage in real time. This bloke needs psychiatric help."

My previous boss banned us from using the phrase "killed the child processes" or anything similar.

"long lost child came home" is still my favourite apache error message.

I'm always tempted to answer "man" to every question.

That's OK. I'm taking care of the ennui bit myself in his place. He's welcome to share it if he really wants to....
