I'm listening to New Order Substance, using the laptop as an oversized Walkman. Goddamn they sucked when they tried doing the funky New York dance act thing. "Confusion", "Shellshocked" and particularly "State Of The Nation", for which there is no hole deep enough. And this is the long version.

We had DSL until about 9:30pm. It was like we were in a one-room Goodies episode, WAITING FOR THE END! The dialup was arranged in time, though, so I reassembled the PC, found the phone cable (after only one call to [livejournal.com profile] arkady to check I hadn't lent it to her), rejigged the house network and rediscovered that trying to solve a problem on Windows is much less time-efficient than simply rebooting. My net connection now matches the speed of my laptop.

We also tried a new USB 2.0 card in both the Mac and [livejournal.com profile] redcountess' PC, establishing that the card is fine (though it doesn't fit properly) and so the 2.5" disk or the disk enclosure is not working, established the same when we applied external power to the enclosure and found the old 2.5" disk so we can test further by swapping that in. And Arnie the cat (Six-Dinner Sid) came in for a cuddle.

I think the unemployed ennui has hit. I have applied for jobs last night and this lunchtime, I have sat around on IRC, I have read Slashdot, we have this much money left. It's nice to curl up to Liz all day, though.

It's been a highly productive day but it doesn't feel like one.

Though you have to admit that Bizarre Love Triangle is a gorgeous slice of electronic euphoria, is it not?

Btw, that Goodies episode is on the second DVD compilation (though you probably knew that).

Personally, I didn't mind State Of The Nation that much; it's not as annoying as, say, Perfect Kiss or Confusion.

Btw, are you acquainted with The Wake (the Factory one not the American derivagoth band)? I got their Harmony + Singles a while back and it's the closest thing to New Order having released a Movement/Power, Corruption & Lies part 2.

Well, yes, there is that, though with enough essence of Power, Corruption & Lies (which (IMHO) was New Order's zenith) to redeem it (IMHO).

They were into the hiphop boom of the time, it wasn't funk, get it right! ;)

Ah, the glory of the 80's "12inch remix".*

I recall those giddy days of artistic licence, where one merely needed to loop the drums, add a few orchestral synth stabs, and make stuttery noises with the backing vocals. For fiften minutes.

*NB some sarcasm supplied with this kit.

If it was hiphop, it must have been filtered through a few layers of Paradise Garage disco first.

Well, hiphop and Detroit techno as well I guess. Well thats what I always hear.

FWIW I quite like "Confusion".

Not sure about Detroit techno; I get the Kraftwerk influence by way of Moroder and Shep Pettibone. And perhaps Afrika Bambattaa (sp?).

Actually, I think I've got MP3s of Praise The Fallen somewhere at home. I'll give it a listen when I get home.

To be honest, I didn't like VNV Nation much upon first hearing them; the whole blood-and-honour war-anthem thing grated a bit. (I know that Joy Division played with fascist/militarist imagery a lot too, though they didn't bring it into their lyrics to the extent that VNV Nation do.)

"Confusion" was the song that finally put me off New Order, having followed them from Joy Division days. "Movement" and the singles before "Blue Monday" I liked, "Power..." and "Blue Monday" I was ambivalent about, but "Confusion" was the first song of theirs that I thought well and truly sucked.

BW, I played "Age of Consent" for the first time in ages a few days ago - now that really should have been a single...

Did it flood the second hand market soon after?

Probably, I didn't actually buy a copy so didn't have one to flog!

They were still doing the no-singles-off-albums thing at that time.

Yes, at one time it was almost the done alternative thing not to have singles on albums, obviously Joy Division and early New Order are the prime examples of that but it happened with a lot of the early post-punk/goth groups too.

If you wanted the single... you bought the single.

And the album tracks were meant to be strong enough to stand up on their own.

Always thought "Your silent face" was the tune of choice from that LP, personally.. But "Age of Consent" was pretty good.

Hey reddragdiva... what did you think of True Faith?

heh, the first time we have disagreed on music i think *grin*. I love confusion, though the substance version isn't great...

Age of concent is good though. What do ya think of Krafty... more like dodgy in my book. I was hoping for a few decent remixes to liven it up, but it seems the CD single almost just repeats the same track 4 times...

*grin* I do sometimes have a softspot for a bit of Revenge now and again, but there's some shite there also.

I guess I'm the only person who thinks the third (and last) Electronic album rocked. Though i do think the second one sucked like everyone else thinks

I found Get Ready rather naff; for one, Barney's songwriting seems to have deteriorated further.

OTOH, I found Here To Stay to be a return to form, up there with True Faith and Touched By The Hand Of God. Mind you, it may have been a case of the Chemical Brothers showing New Order how to do New Order again.

Have you heard the new single, Krafty?

which is funny as Here to Stay is hugely Confusion influenced, to my ears, with a bit of Perfect Kiss *grin*

Krafty is just very "coffee table". It's very pleasant to listen to, and not a bad tune at all, in fact as an "alternative pop song" it's pretty good, but nowhere near past glories.

Btw, should you need another USB 2.0 card (PCI), I've got one to spare, courtesy of a new mobo that speaks USB 2.0 natively. It can be yours for pintage.

(I also have a few other similarly deprecated cards sitting around.)

have you got the original Confusion, rather than the Substance remake hanging around somewhere? I rather like that version, plus the ep of mixes that arthur baker put out last year - seem to rememebr the coma and bones mix was rather good.

It might be on retro (the badly formed 4 (or 5) cd box set thingy) or on some import. Seeing as you have a the vinyl i could shunt you an mp3 sometime, but if ya don't like it, don't feel ya have to *grin*
