speaking as a nearish resident though, it is not good news at all ... to properly rebuild the station (and it NEEDS rebuilding) without being able to open up a full-size access will be extremely difficult, maybe impossible, and take an awful lot longer.

In a design sense, I wasn't overstruck by the proposed surface development, but ...

There is an alternative plan (http://www.savecamden.com/savecamden/Thealternative.htm) that would take up less space, cost less and preserve Camden's character/subcultural sacred sites, whilst allowing for increased passenger growth.

AIUI though they need to rebore the platform sections as they are too small and the best way to do this (ie provide the best interchange between lines and safest service to passengers) was to construct the new station in a pit, as per JLE ...

The other factor is, of course, that TFL owns the block the station and market are on, so demolishing it was always going to be easier than using land off to one side, which might have to be bought.
