I'd like to know why they can't tunnel sideways and bring an exit up in any of the crappy areas on the other sides of that junction that nobody would give a shit about...

AIUI though they need to rebore the platform sections as they are too small and the best way to do this (ie provide the best interchange between lines and safest service to passengers) was to construct the new station in a pit, as per JLE ...

The other factor is, of course, that TFL owns the block the station and market are on, so demolishing it was always going to be easier than using land off to one side, which might have to be bought.
