The great thing about having cash come in is that you can pretend you can afford to spend it. So we finally got
redcountess's 40th birthday present: a 12" Powerbook (1.33GHz, 768MB RAM, all manuals and disks, Apple Bluetooth optical mouse, Dixon's warranty successfully transferred) off eBay. Thanks to
flavius_m for technical consulting. Price was £760, which is pretty good for a machine that was new in April (selling because he got a work laptop and the Powerbook wasn't safe around his four-year-old ... we met the four-year-old and concurred). It's so annoying prices haven't dropped at all in the wake of the Intel announcement ... Twenty-odd people contributed about £300 toward this toy. Liz thanks you all!
The pic above was taken on the other shiny thing Liz got, a Palm Zire 72s, with Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera and MP3 playback, from the eXpansys B-stock page. After battling it all day, she now has intarweb on the Zire via Bluetooth from the laptop. ("The good thing about MacOS X is that you can use a Unix command line. The bad thing is you have to.") Both also talk to her phone. The camera appears to be a pinhole, but it's better than the one on the phone. (The above shot is grainy because it was taken in very dim light and severely tweaked up to usability.)
We still plan a housewarming/birthday when Liz's health is a little better. Might even have it before moving out.

Date: 2005-07-10 01:05 pm (UTC)(A new laptop for me is pretty clearly on the "like" list rather than the "need" or even "want" lists, but we're watching the eBay Mac listings like hawks. Or I could get a comparable x86 laptop and put Ubuntu on it - that'd be really nice, actually.)
