Xenu is not only surprisingly popular in the blogosphere at present (almost up to "internet meme" status), it's getting quoted in just about every press article on Tom Cruise of late (generally unacknowledged, but you can spot where the phrasings are lifted from). So yes, I do!

Sorry if my comment sounded confrontational; it wasn't intended to be... I'm genuinely curious as to who the readership will be...

Does anyone care that The Bubble Gum Incident was an important early incident "where you are hit with a motion and finally develop an obsession about motion". What does it mean?—it barely parses to me. And does anyone care what it means? I'm guessing if I read the entire article I might find out what it means, but since it's all nonsense anyway, why on earth would I want to?

The idea is that "Featured Status" is a mark of quality: good writing, references, etc. Raul, the Featured Articles Dictator, has stated that in his opinion any article past stub status can be turned into a feature, no matter how obscure the subject matter. Xenu was thought to be too obscure by a few people, and now it's a popular press reference.

As for the mass market, the new article is for those who enjoyed Xenu and want more batshit in their lives ;-)

With the attention Scientology's been getting lately, there's no doubt a lot of people being pulled into it with their eyes only half open. There aren't a lot of resources that go into this kind of detail about how completely messed up the whole thing is and the stuff in that article isn't revealed to you until the "religion" already has a significant chunk of your money.

I think they should be upfront about the Xenu thing. The Christians tell people right up front that God made a woman from a man's rib and a virgin gave birth to a prophet who was actually the Son of God, who died and came back, and it hasn't hurt them.

The Church has tried to keep Xenu confidential; critics claim revealing the story is in the public interest, given the high prices charged for OT III. The Church avoids making mention of Xenu in public statements and has gone to considerable effort to maintain the story's confidentiality, including legal action on the grounds of both copyright and trade secrecy. Despite this, much material on Xenu has leaked to the public.

I wrote about half of Xenu, but this one is mainly the work of Chris Owen, who's written a pile of essays on Scientology over the past ten years. He's got the "masterpiece of understatement" thing down pat.
