redcountess is the best eBay victim blagger ever. For a total of £229 (including VAT and postage), she secured me the shiny new old Compaq Evo N410c I am writing this on. 1GHz Pentium III, 256MB RAM. No wifi option, sadly (though I have cards here). Windows 2000 installed — the Compaq corporate laptops have the Windows license stuck on the actual machine — though I plan to Ubuntu it ASAP. I HAVE A LAPTOP THAT DOESN'T THRASH EVERY TIME I CLICK ON SOMETHING!

Still on its way: Armada M300, the low-end version of what was my work laptop in 2001 and the predecessor to this here Evo. I'll see what can be done with that, and it may be on its way to narnee soon after (dependent on sunspots, etc.). Assuming Royal Mail don't use it for football practice or similar.

My handy Dashboard currency converter says you paid about US $402 for it, compared to the circa £630 I paid for my new machine. I'm now in serious laptop craving mode, but need to get a back up firewire hard drive first.

Yeah, it goes up to 1024MB (two SODIMMs). When the Armada arrives I'll be doing a Crucial order for two 512MB modules. I'm not sure if the SODIMMs from the Evo will fit the Armada, but I'm hoping they will - the Armada is only a PII-333, but should be eminently usable for modern tasks with enough memory.

I think the 410C takes DDR, which is unlikely to fit in the Armada.

Ah, yes - the M300 has a 440BX-style chipset. I'm afraid you're probably out of luck in that respect. The other thing to be careful of is that you need low density RAM for the 440s, otherwise only half of the DIMM will be recognised.
