I have written a page about Ubuntu 5.04 on the Compaq Evo N410c. It contains useful general hints for those installing Ubuntu 5.04 in general (hello to [livejournal.com profile] stevek and [livejournal.com profile] arkady!):

First thing to do: System -> Administration -> Ubuntu Update Manager. A bit has changed since 5.04.

Second thing to do: System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. Synaptic is incredibly nice, sensible and usable. Cheers to Debian! Once in Synaptic, go Settings -> Repositories. Click "Add". The bar saying Ubuntu 5.04 "Hoary Hedgehog" is a pop-up menu. Make sure all four boxes below are ticked. Click "OK", click "Add" again, select the next one and tick all four boxes below. Click "OK", click "Add" again, select the last one and tick all four boxes there. Click "OK", click "OK". Synaptic will then update from the servers so you have all the software in all the included repositories listed. This saves a lot of pain later.

For Flash: search on "flash" and mark "flashplayer-mozilla" for installation. This will work with the Ubuntu copy of Firefox.

For MP3: search on "gstreamer" and mark "gstreamer0.8-plugin-apps". Now go through and mark for installation anything else with a name starting "gstreamer0.8-" that isn't marked.

For your convenience: search on "esound" and tick "esound-clients". The included Totem Movie Player is stupid and annoying; with the clients, you get command-line apps to play sound.

After Synaptic, open Firefox and go to addons.mozilla.org. I promptly added FlashBlock, Sessionsaver, ForecastFox and, of course, Beer Oclock. I also went to cardgames.mozdev.org and added that.

My email address is on the page, but you lot can respond here.

[livejournal.com profile] redcountess just slipped in the eBay and fell on a PowerMac G4 800MHz Quicksilver. Whoops!

You're amassing quite an impressive Mac collection there, it seems...

Not bad; I've got a recent 15" PowerBook, two circa-2001-vintage laptops (one kept for OS9 music software, the other as a travelling machine/DVD player; iBooks with slow CPUs have excellent battery life, btw) and a beige G3 (one of those with built-in SCSI but no USB or FireWire) sitting in a storage locker in Melbourne.

What's the Performa 5200, btw? It's not an old 68k machine, is it?

Cute...

I wonder how long until someone guts one of those and installs a Mac Mini in the case. :-)

Nah, you'd do that with a Classic Mac Colour ;-)

I'm tempted to turn my SE/30 into a fishtank.....

Although I've just flogged off my G3 300 to a mate for 50 quid ;) Which suits me as I hardly use it, having a G4 400 to use as my main mac.

I truly admire your mac collection, I have lost a lot of my mac geek cred and diluted it with some windoze knowledge and attempts at learning linux.

I only really know myself around OS X, and that's only because it's based on BSD, and I've learnt a bit of FreeBSD in the past two years. However, as the Quicksilver is dual boot, I'll be able to come to grips with Classic on a fast system :-)

Wouldn't the CRT be too small in one of those though? Don't they do something like 512 pixels across?

Yeah, but it'd be more deserving than a 5200!

I &heart; your icon, btw!! Where did you get it from??

Isn't it just?

I found it on bOING bOING (http://www.boingboing.net), which is generally a good source for cool stuff.

I was trying to install a DVD player on my Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE) yesterday, but it fails and I've no idea how to install the slightly-less-legal decoder it recommended.

I've been thinking more lately about getting a new laptop but have never known whether one can trust things/people on eBay; same as I very rarely order anything for postal delivery that I have to pre-pay so I always get everything cash-to-go ...

A few tips on buying from eBay:

Read everything in the ad, especially the sellers terms - whether they will add VAT or 4% to cover Paypal fees. Also, note the photo - is it the actual item or a stock photo. If you have any questions email the seller before bidding. If the seller is in London, ask whether you can pick up the item if you win and pay at the time, that way you get to check the sale is genuine (we did that with my Powerbook).

There is an extension for Firefox/Mozilla called EbayNegs - this will call up any negative feedback that an eBay user has received. Also, even if positive check recent feedback for the type of items that seller has previously sold.

Erm, just a note on fees, Paypal (and other online payment services) fees are not allowed to be passed onto the buyer, since last year. If a seller is insisting you add 4% on for Paypal then don't pay it.

Oh and I have decided I'll replace this xp1800 pc with a mac when funds permit i suspect.

Yes, I am aware of the Paypal regs, but it's still something to watch out for when looking at an ad.
