I hereby loathe and despise gpilot, after it decided the really good thing to do was to synchronise the Palm to the PC, rather than the other way around, wiping the LJ entry and everything else I put in yesterday. I'll be Kubuntuing (or at least KPiloting) the laptop soonest possible.

The MP3 CAMERA got its first proper commute test yesterday ... I'll be getting noise-cancelling headphones forthwith. Given the noise levels on the Victoria Rollercoaster, I should probably be using them anyway, and you probably should be too. Any recommendations?

(I particularly recommend Original Seeds vol I and II as a commuting soundtrack: levels of substance, variety and historical interest strong enough to fight back Walthamstow and Mordor. Except Isaac Hayes' eighteen-minute version of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," which is today's "what the fucking fuck were they thinking?" prizewinner. Though I think tomorrow will be EBM.)

[livejournal.com profile] redcountess and [livejournal.com profile] arkady raised themselves bodily from their places of rest for The Producers last night at Drury Lane. It were ace. I shall have to score some suitably cashed-up IT whoredom to keep my darlings in the style to which we would like to become accustomed. HLAGH HLAGH HLAGH HLAGH HLAGH. A domestic goddess' work is never done. (flings legs in air)

This morning I interviewed at a large newspaper's online department. Could be good. Waiting to hear back on yesterday.

Update: Got it. I start a three-month contract in Morden tomorrow. £29/hour, 35 hours a week, public service. (FX: champagne cork.) Now to get an umbrella company before the end of the day, oops shite!

Update 2: Poor other pimp! Taking this one, I just said "no" to the same money to beat around Guardian Online's web servers (this morning's interview). But I did say to call again mid-November. I must change my phone message accordingly. HLAGH HLAGH HLAGH HLAGH HLAGH.

Update 3: Contracting umbrella company lined up. Here's to them not sucking.

That's teh thing, you're not setting one up in a hurry, you're buying an already-set-up "off the shelf". :) Walk it, wave cash, show some ID, sign some papers and You Are Done.

I'd, honestly, collect every single shred of paper that has remotely anything to do with economy and rent an attack accountant to deal with them on a bi-weekly basis. I could, probably, do it myself, but it's always handy having a tame attack accountant lined up, should they be needed.

I totally recommend Etymotics; ER-6 are perfectly good and I use them, ER-4 are über-l33+ and 3 times the price
Check out also the Etymotics good earplugs, too, great for clubs and other loud places.

Yes. ER-6. Good.

I will also say that the Etymotic ER-20 earplugs have been field-tested at B-Movie, and were sufficiently useful.

So, for those of us unfamiliar with the taxation system in the UK, what does GBP 29/hr work out to, post-tax?

Not yet... Give it a couple more months. I've been watching the tier of USD->CAD->AUD shrink to about 1.2 after sitting at 1.4 for what seems like decades. I'm figuring that will be down to about 1.05 (essentially even) in about four more years.

Umbrella company: http://www.parasolit.co.uk/
Don't use properity4.

Earphones: E3cs as sold by apple store have fine sound, great isolation, IF you can get them in straight and stop falling out when you're walking. 6i's (IIRC) are supposed to hold position better.

Yay, you.

Congratulations!

...On getting the job, and on Not getting a job at the Grauniad: they work very hard to preserve their dismal reputation as the worst employer on 'Fleet Street'.

Parasol IT (http://www.parasolit.co.uk) are a cheap and very basic (=Efficient and hassle-free) IR35-Compliant umbrella company for contractors and consultants, and you can do it all online.

Do yourself a favor- try j-pilot instead:

root@nulled:~# apt-cache search jpilot
jpilot - graphical app. to modify the contents of your Palm Pilot's DBs
jpilot-backup - Backup plugin for J-Pilot
jpilot-plugins - plugins for jpilot (Palm Pilot desktop)
jpilot-syncmal - MAL (AvantGo) plugin for jpilot (Palm Pilot desktop)
libpisock8 - Library for communicating with a PalmOS PDA

Yes- I use it even though I don't use my palm like ever anymore ;)

I was drawn to it because I used to run Fluxbox as a WM and jpilot did not require retarded amounts of G or K libs.

Also, check out TuxCards- fun way to keep notes of things (and has macros like Ctrl-D and Ctrl-Tto insert current date and time).

Congrats. Welcome back to the world of IT whoredom. It pays the bills.

Original Seeds I is a fave of mine too (except for the same caveat about Isaac Hayes. Cool to hear the first time. The first time.), only just go number II and haven't had a chance to listen yet.
